What are your Christmas family traditions?

Posted by admin on Dec-31-2009

Other than opening presents, I don’t think I really have any. Do you have any Christmas family traditions that are special to you?

I have two daughters and we always let them make their cookies for santa every year and make treats for the reindeer! We also read to the the Cajun Night Before Christmas (we live in Louisiana) on Christmas Eve and every one gets to open one gift. Its nothing too big but something my parents did with me also :)

Every year we get a Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and decorate it. I have 2 brothers, and for as long as I can remember we have alternated putting the star on top of the tree each year. We also bake Christmas cookies, even after we realized we don’t need to leave them out for Santa (were all in college now). Also every Christmas Eve we watch a Christmas movie. When we were younger it was always A Muppet Christmas Carol, but when since we’ve gotten older it’s been National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Well the day before Christmas, I always bake cookies with my mom and then my lil brother helps me decorate them. And then on Christmas Eve, our whole family (me, mom, dad, my 2 brothers and grandma) drive around the city looking at all the Christmas lights, and we pick our favorites and take photos. OH and we always take a thermos of hot chocolate to drink =] Then we go home and watch Christmas movies (usually A Christmas Carol or Home Alone) and listen to Christmas movies, and do Christmas dances. Then we leave some cookies and milk for Santa (even though we all know he doesn’t exist) and carrots for the reindeers.
And then on Christmas day, I wake up at 5 or 6 and decorate the house and leave out all the gifts for everybody. Then I make a giant breakfast for everybody, and pancakes, and we eat the cookies, and I put Christmas songs on full volume, and we open our presents. Then I help my mom do the turkey and make Christmas cake, and then we eat =]

*Each of us (my 2 siblings and i) have gotten a Christmas ornament each year from mom and dad since we were born. I’m 24 so after this Christmas I will have 24 ornaments :) They said this way when we have families of our own we will have plenty of memories as we decorate our trees
*Christmas morning we heat up the breakfast casseroles that mom and I make Christmas Eve while we exchange gifts. After we do the presents, we eat our big breakfast. Then visit family, friends, and just spend time together :)

Making stuffed dates. They’re dates, cut open, stuffed with peanut butter, and rolled in sugar. I typically do it by myself now, but I can remember doing it when my dad would cut the dates open because I was too young to use a knife. It originated on his side of the family.

Decorating the tree the weekend after December 8th, at dinner time, while eating a bunch of appetizers and drinking our special Christmas punch.

Going to my grandparents’ house a few days before Christmas to look at their decorations and gorge ourselves on Grammy’s homemade cookies. I think it’s just a law – no matter what you do or where you go, your grandmother will always make the best cookies.

Lying our stockings out in front of the fire place. Our conversations goes something like this. Early December: "Hey, let’s get stocking holders this year so we can hang the stockings!" "Yeah!" Christmas Eve: "We never got stocking holders…." Ha ha! We also still leave cookies and milk for Santa while my dad yells at us to leave him Beer and cheese/truffles. No one knows why anymore.

Waking up around 3 o’clock Christmas morning and looking at my decorations and enjoying that wonderful, wonderful, Christmas Day Feeling. I of course wonder what I’ll get, but I also make it a point, no matter how much I have to do before we go out to the tree, to think about why I celebrate Christmas.

No one is allowed out to the tree, stockings, or presents until a set time. It’s usually 7 or 8. Though this year I’m sneaking out a little early to remove special homemade candy from the refrigerator and add it to the gifts I got for people. It’s supposed to be refrigerated but a few hours out is okay. When that time comes we all go out and wish each other Merry Christmas, look at the decorations. We usually snap a few pictures while waiting for our turn to get coffee/hot chocolate/juice (very small kitchen). Once everyone has a drink they sit down and I hand everyone their stocking. We open them up and have a grand time looking through all our little random gifts and asking what so-and-so got, and what in the world is this, and laughing a lot. Then we all must sit at the table and eat breakfast. When everyone is done we pick one person, and that person picks a gift from under the tree and gives it to the person it’s to. You can’t pick for yourself. The person opens their gift, oohs and aahs, opens it, whatever, then picks a gift for someone else from under the tree. This goes on until all the presents are opened.
