Houzz.com, a database and community on home design and decoration, based in the U.S is branching out to Toronto and Vancouver.  This website is actually a high tech version of cutting pages out of a magazine as described by Adi Tatarko, the site CEO, in Jennifer Wilson’s article “Searching for the Perfect Houzz.”

Adi Tatarko further revealed that their foremost goal is to come up with a tool that people will enjoy using as well as making home improvement a fun process.  She further added that the site’s help may even save few marriages on the way.

Houzz.com has been around for two years and it has incorporated many features into its site already.  Its features include home tours.  The website also features thousands of thousands of images contributed by more than 18,000 professionals worldwide.

Jennifer Wilson further said in her article that, “While the database was available to Canadians since launch, fans can now look at homes in their own cities, in addition to saving favourite photos to ideabooks — their version of an online scrapbook, commenting on the shots and tagging items with sourcing info and other details. It’s free for users to upload their own photos, and interior designers can use the site to host their portfolios, which Tatarko notes, offers would-be renovators the ability to find designers in their region who work to their style. In fact, says the site’s director of business development Katherine Nannizzi, some designers are even finding up to 30 per cent of their traffic coming from Houzz each month.”

Abel Fergusson: What He Has to Say on Decorating on a Budget

Posted by Jade Martins on Wednesday, 8:00 pm

Redesigning the home is something most people want.  This may be for several reasons like a new environment can reinvigorate the spirit, a new feel of the home refreshes the mind or just because one simply wants it.

Here is what Abel Fergusson has to say, “Many people would like to decorate or redesign the look of their home, but aren’t sure if they can afford it. It’s not necessary to spend a great deal of money to radically transform the look of your home. Redesigning the appearance of your home doesn’t have to be expensive, as in many cases simply moving things around can make a big difference, while at other times you can purchase something used that will have a dramatic impact. The home decorating suggestions that follow are all either inexpensive or free, but they’ll nonetheless give your home an exciting new look.”

In decorating the home, there are many spaces to have this done.  But what is really eye-catching when one enters a room is the wall.  Giving the wall a lift would be a good idea.  It may be by changing wall decorations with a simple yet artsy poster.  Or you can even use attractive calendar or perhaps a favorite picture to create a new look.

Another simple idea to make the home beautiful is to add ornamental plants in the living room and other strategic places.  The greens inside the home can create a refreshing feel that can be good for all the people living in it.

A large room can be modified by making use of a folding screen.  There are folding screens that are very eccentrically designed.  This can enhance the look of your home.

Spring Paint Ideas

Posted by Jade Martins on Wednesday, 7:40 pm

The Delta Optimist has published new spring ideas as the weather becomes warmer.  The change of season is a hint to repaint living spaces.

In the article, Warm up to spring with a new coat of paint, Delta Optimist quoted Alison Goldman, the marketing communications manager for CIL Paints saying:

“Just as replacing dark winter coats in favour of cheerier-looking spring jackets helps lighten moods, even the smallest infusion of colour will give your home a lift.”

Such article further said that, “Adding colour to your home’s interior is as easy as applying a vibrant tone to an accent wall, jazzing up an old piece of furniture, or painting a “frame” around a mirror, picture or doorway, Goldman says. On the exterior, simply changing the colour of your front door, garage or window frames will go a long way in rejuvenating your property, and reversing the toll Canada’s harsh winters tend to take on our houses”.

The season’s great color options are jewel toned blues and greens, vibrant limes, sweet apricots and pinks, and soothing lavenders and greys.

Goldman added that the season calls to be bolder in color choices.  It is a way of exhibiting appreciation for colors in all aspects of human lives.  Bolder color signifies optimism and charm.

CIL Paints gave useful tips in painting as follows:

Use of color sense.  IT is best to study your surroundings before choosing and buying paint colors.  You have to consider existing decorations and that paint choice should compliment to what is already in your home.

Follow the correct order.  Painting should be in order.  This means ceiling is painted first before anything else.  This should be followed by the walls.  After painting the walls, the baseboard and trim come next.
