decorating the home, colors?

Posted by admin on Feb-22-2010

been slowly working on re-doing my trailer’s living room. I’m going with shades of brown/tan and dark red theme. I uploaded some new photos to my photobucket album showing a new entertainment center and some new pillows. Got to thinking about colors and I wondered how much it mattered if the colors matched? (for instance in my case, the maroon pillows on my loveseat aren’t exactly the same shade as what’s on the edge of my bar and when buying new curtains they likely won’t be the same exact color either)….so my question is then, does it matter if the colors aren’t exact matches?

Gina, thanks for the reply; it doesn’t bother me that they don’t match, I just wondered if that was a no-no when it comes to decorating.

It’s never good when everything matches! If it concerns you…go to a fabric store and find a fabric that has ALL the shades and use it for floor and couch pillows! That will tie it all together. Do this last…it’ll work!

The colors do not have to match exactly. Look for the same tones. For instance, you cannot pair a bright fire engine red with the maroon, but shades of burgandy and maroon will work together if there is no orange or bright red tones in them.

If I were you, I would look for a print, such as a stripe in new curtains. You may be able to find somthing that has tan and maroon. The maroon does not have to match perfectly; it just has to blend. I would go for a longer length to give a feeling of height to the walls.

I’d also suggest that you clear off the clutter from the bar and add just a few accessories that will tie things together and give a pop of color. Try a big bowl of fruit. Some apples, such as Delicious, are more of a deep red than a bright red. Or use a tray with a pineapple on one end, apples and red grapes on the other. Add a candle plate and add three fat pillar candles, in different heights, but in a burgandy color that matches the trim on the bar. Or use three candlesticks in varying sizes. Kirkland’s will have boxed sets of candle holders.

As I said, no need to match perfectly. Just as long as the colors are harmonious and blend well together.
