Tips when Painting your home

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-15-2011

There are so many things you may know about interior painting that you may know about.

Painting is one that most people feel they can handle and even do a good job; turning a drab room or two into a fresh living space. While this conception is true, still it is very easy to make mistakes and turn a simple job into a nightmare. So if you’re planning to do some interior painting, it’s good to know a few simple rules.

The kind of paint to make use of is extremely important. There are two main types that you will be able to choose from-Oil and latex. Each have their own pros and cons that you ought to consider. When it comes to oil, you will be able to get a more even result. This kind of paint is also known to last longer than latex. On the bad side though, you will have to deal with the fumes that are very nasty. Removing the paint will also be a problem.

The latex paint is more eco friendly and will be able to dry faster as well. Cleaning up will also be very easy. Just make sure that you are careful with the kind of surface you use latex on since it may cause wood to swell.

Efficient Interior Painting During The Holidays

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-24-2010

A lot of people will think that interior painting is best put off till the spring or summer.  Well, some folks are begging to differ. The main reason why paint takes so long to dry is because of the humidity in the air.  Since winter pretty much sucks out all of the moisture in the air leaving you with a cold and arid environment, the fastest time for paint to dry would be during winter.

With the emergence of odorless paints and those with no fumes, it’s pretty safe to paint even if the doors are all closed.  Wouldn’t it be great to finish your painting during the winter so that when spring comes, your interior will already be crisp and colorful, leaving you with more time to enjoy the sun.

Interior Design Colors – Contrast, Contrast, Contrast!

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-22-2010

The easiest way to make your interior visually appealing is to add contrast.  This is achieved by mixing together light tones and dark solid colors together.  The simplest way to do this would be to pick a light color as a base and add darker colors as an accent.  If you have a light-colored sofa then your best bet to add contrast would be to pick throw pillows that are dark. By using this simple strategy all around your room, you’re making the colors pop and therefore giving an overall visual appeal that can’t be achieved by blending in similar colors.

When redecorating, it’s also easier to pick colors because you’ll usually start off with a coating of something light-colored. Picking a contrasting color is always a lot easier than picking a shade that goes well with your base.

True Life Book Review

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-6-2010

This is a very interesting article on the release of the shelter book “True Life” (Princeton Architectural Press), about a monograph with a forward by the novelist A.M. Homes that covers Lucien Rees Roberts and Steven Harris’ professional collaboration over the past quarter century; Steven is the founding partner of Steven Harris Architects. What makes this book so different is its unique categorization. Instead of going by project, it goes by where people actually live. For example–t’s divided into sections such as dine, lounge, study, play, sleep and climb. Here’s what the Wall Street Journal have to say:

Steven believes his style, or styles, have something to do with his sexual orientation. “Often when one grows up gay you become a very keen observer of the normative culture because there are times when you want to pass,” he explained. “You see how people live and observe their domestic habits in a really close way because you want to be like them. A lot of my fascination with the routines of everyday life comes from watching that.”
