Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-17-2010

My husband and I bought our first house, It is finally done being built and we are ready to move in to it. I need some suggestions though. Currently the house is a tannetural color through out with crisp white moldings and doors. I was thinking of painting maybe 1 wall in my kitchen a deep brownish red color, and 1 wall in my living room where the fireplace a darker brown…here are the pics, i know the front yard needs landscaped, I havent had time to do it yet they just finished building the house this week.

ooops its supposed to be tan neutral color
would it be too much to paint my whole kitchen the red ?

i LOVE your new house, its so cute. Congrats!! As for the colors I would paint the kitchen the red you want, it would pop nice against the bright crisp white trim and do the living room in a brownish tan color that will look great against the red… love love love your color choices!!!

Home Decorating: Less Is More

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-16-2010

With the huge boom in interior designers and home decorating stores and businesses it is easy to feel unqualified to take on the decoration of your own home. The only thing is, people have been decorating their own homes for years, it isn’t until recently that we suddenly needed the help of interior designers and such to make our homes look like we want them to. You just need to know what you want and then think like an interior designer.

You first need to pick a space or a room that you are going to work on decorating. Only do one at a time, spreading your time over several rooms may lead you to become frustrated since the progress will seem very slow. Once you have your area choose a color that you like. If you are going with a bold or bright color it is better to make that an accent color rather than covering the entire wall. An entire room of bright red or deep purple can make the room hard to relax in since your eyes will constantly be trying to adjust to the extreme colors.

After the color, find yourself a theme. It doesn’t need to be anything crazy like cowboys or space ships, but decide if you want the items in the room to be modern or antique. Then head out and find a few items that fit into that theme. It is necessary that you don’t cram the room with figurines. Once you try to fit too many things in one room, whether it be too many colors or too much stuff or more than one theme the room just looks messy and unorganized all the time.

If you can’t come up with any ideas for what to put in your home, walk through a dollar store or craft store or simply search the web for interior decorating ideas.

Ideas for home ballet/dance studio?

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-16-2010

My house is small and I don’t want to spend too much on it either as I thought I’d ask my dad to fix one up for me for my birthday present. Any ideas on decorating, using space wisely, equipment, etc.?

there’s a type of flooring especially for dance studios, it’s bouncy, so when you fall or land wrong, your body doesn’t absorb the shock. you may also want to look into previously used wood floors, mirrors, etc, to cut down on your footprint:)

Pottery Barn’s catalog has some pretty good deco ideas. You can view it online, too. Any furnishings catalog can provide you with unique ideas. Have fun!

I am looking for a website that has examples of different kitchens, bathrooms, pantries, bedrooms, dining rooms, guest rooms, dens, offices, garages that are decorated. I need some ideas.

Try some of the real estate sites that have interior pictures of the homes for sale….. realtor.com, prudential.com, yahoo real estate, etc.

Western Decorating Ideas For Your Kitchen

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-13-2010

If you are into the Western decorating theme, you can have a lot of fun using it to decorate your kitchen. In fact, you can take one element of the theme and go crazy with it. For instance, one Western decorating idea is to focus on a Western object like some cowboy boots or a cowboy hat. You can even combine elements and use both of them as your central decorating theme.

You can find all types of decor in the Western decorating theme. Try looking for cookie jars or other ceramics that you can sit out on your counter for an interesting effect. Also look for western themed curtains and light switch covers. One fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon is to scour the local antique shops for Western themed decor. You’ll be surprised at the interesting items you can find! You can use browns, red, navy, or cream to pull in the Americana theme to the mix as well.

One great way to pull off the theme is to also look for accents made of unfinished wood. You can often find tables and chairs that actually look like they were made with unfinished logs. These are perfect for a Western decorated kitchen. In addition, you can use photo frames that look unfinished and put pictures of your family or of western mountains and hills in them. You can also find many items made from tree branches or logs as well as items made from deer antlers and items covered in cow hide (either faux or real!)

Another great thing to use is copper or black iron accents. You can get away with either of these. If you have a pot hanger over your kitchen island, you should try mixing both copper pieces and cast iron pieces. In addition, you can even use cast iron skillets or pans as wall decor and hang them accordingly. And don’t forget pot holders, tablecloths and dish towels made with Western theme fabrics.

Try your own Western decorating ideas in your kitchen to see exactly what works for you and what doesn’t. The Western theme is perfect if you love to constantly feel like you are the “Wild West” or in a log cabin. It can look great in any home if you are consistent with the decor. Using Western style accents on the counters, window treatments, floors and walls will help pull the look together and make you feel like you are rustling up grub for your cowhands on a Western ranch even if you are living in a modern city home!
