Decorating my Home – Living for the first time on my own?

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-23-2010

Hello everyone,

I am going to be living for the first time on my own … I am moving out of my parents house and to another country. Egypt, Cairo.
I already have an apartment there, 2-bed room and fully furnished including all electrical appliances
I would still need to buy kitchen utilities, blankets, sheets, towels, etc
I have so many questions:

1st: I would like to learn to cook.. I have never done anything by myself; we had a maid at home so I don’t know how to do anything. Any cooking tips, what are the basic applicants I should have, how hard is it to cook?

2nd How hard is it going to be to take care of the apartment, any tips?

3rd Any decoration tips/ ideas/ for decorating the place. Any useful websites? Other than IKEA , I have already checked that

If you are from Egypt/ any other tips

Thanks a lot

1) If you can read, then you can cook. Start simple just things that require a few ingredients only, always follow the recipe until you feel confident to make substitutes. Don’t bother buying cooking books – there are great recipes online (free).
2) If you ensure that you put things back after you finish with them – your unit will remain tidy. Don’t leave things lying around out of place. Clean is a whole other matter however, make sure you do the following things weekly:
- change bed sheets, scrub bathrooms (toilets, sinks, basins, showers, baths), kitchen (disinfect benchtops, bins, stove plates, ovens etc, etc) (Wipe benchtops daily to keep clean), vacuum and mop floors, wipe down all tables, dust surfaces (feather duster)
Monthly: clean out oven (if pyrolytic run cycle, if not use oven cleaner), scrub oven shelves
Quarterly: wash and windex windows, empty food pantry and kitchen cupboards, wipe and disinfect.
3) Decorating tips – Keep it simple and plain. Colours are great, patterns date though, you are best to pick things that are classic looking that won’t clash with the next house you move into. Good luck.

Love to get ideas for decorating first home. Not IKEA or anything like that, but real peoples homes. Thank You:)

This is the site that I go to to get ideas from real people.

I am in Beta and my group was assigned to decorate a wreath, so if you have ANY ideas, please answer!! thanks!

Does anyone in that section have dementia? If so, don’t put anything that looks like food. Other than that, your imagination is the only limit!

Here are some ideas

Apartments in New York are famous for being ridiculously tiny. Studio apartments are sometimes barely able to contain a twin bed, never mind any other sort of furniture or appliances. Apartments in New York are also famous for being ridiculously expensive! Some New Yorkers have to work two jobs: one job to pay for their rent, the second to pay for everything else.

Thankfully, with a little creativity you can decorate your New York apartment very cheaply. With a little bit more creativity you can fit a whole house worth of furniture and decorations into an apartment the size of a toddler’s shoe box.

Anybody can go to IKEA and copy one of their floor plan designs. Anybody can copy the decorating page out of a magazine or the style section. These are not tips that you will find on any “fancy” website but they will save you space and money.

1. Get a loft bed. Loft beds can usually be purchased relatively cheaply in New York. You can also construct a loft bed from some tall and sturdy bookcases and an old door. Bolt the bookcases to the floor and then bolt the door over the top of the bookcases. Place your mattress on top of the door. Instant loft bed with plenty of room underneath! If you construct your own loft bed make sure that everything is steady enough to remain standing in the event that you toss and turn in your sleep.

2. Shelving can be constructed by finding old industrial strength milk crates behind New York restaurants and shops and stacking them on top of each other. Purchase some pretty colored spray paint and use the paint to make the otherwise ugly milk crates pretty. These “shelving units” can be used for books, knick knacks, clothing, whatever.

3. You know those huge wooden spools that cable gets rolled onto? If you can find one of those, you have a great table. It’s a little on the short side, but if you stack it on a couple of risers, you should be able to elevate it to a normal table height without problems. Again, you can paint it or, if you don’t feel like painting, simply cover it in a nice piece of fabric and it will look fine!

4. Use a trunk as a coffee table and use it to house blankets and pillows or old books and magazines.

5. To save space in the kitchen use pretty hooks (can be found for pennies in New York’s second hand shops) to hang your pots and pans on the wall. This will free up your cabinets for food or whatever else you need to store. Plus, hanging the pots and pans gives your kitchen wall a great, three dimensional arty look!

6. Use an old dresser as a television stand and then store your DVDs in the drawers! Put the DVD player, video game consoles, VCR, etc. on a small bookshelf that sits next to the television set.

You’ll be surprised at all of the ideas you get as you get into decorating your New York home!

Decorating Ideas for a Rent House?

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-19-2010

I recently moved into a rent house and would like some ideas about decorating. Of course I can’t paint or do anything permanent to the house, but I really want to make it feel comfortable and like home. Any personal ideas you have or websites would be great.

Assuming that you already have your furniture like beds, dining and living sets, then you can do the following:
For dining table, use a nice table runner, place a bowl of fruits in the middle, or a vase of flowers. Have a rug underneathe table and chairs. For living area, add nice cushions for your sofa, have a few table lamps on side tables or floor lamp, picture frames on walls and tables, plants or flowers, carpets or rugs, candles, a few books or magazines on coffee table and a bowl of potpourrie. To add warmth to a room, have wooden furniture, wooden blinds with curtains for windows and lots of soft furnishings. If you like a room to be bright and breezy, use bright and cheerful colors. For bedrooms, choose nice colors for your bedspread, place pictures and table lamp on bedside tables, a small plant or jewelry box. For bathrooms, buy towels which have nice colorful designs or prints on it so your towels are like a decor themselves when you hang them in the bathrooms. Place all your items in basket or box on countertop. Have a nice rug in bathroom. For kitchen, buy interesting utensils that not only work for you but are decor pieces themselves. For example, I have a brush shaped in a potato which I use to clean my potatoes! Also an egg whisk that has a handle that looks like a chick. A cow shaped paper towel holder. I think you get the idea. Have colorful kitchen cloths and apron. If you have a table and chairs in kitchen, add interesting cushions with farm animal or fruit designs on them. Buy placements of same. These are all movable and personal items which you can use in your home decoration, easy and practical.
