Decorating with Fruit Prints this spring

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-18-2011

Home decorating magazines like Elle Décor have been one of those places women around the globe get their home decorating ideas from.  Interestingly, the May issue of Elle décor has brought the new trend of using fruit designs in your home.

This certainly is something that will be perfect for the spring season. We are all bored of those extra formal patterns in our homes and this gives us the chance to get something more playful. The There are a wide variety of ways that you can use this unique idea in your home.

In the kitchen for example, you can have your pot holders be those with some fruit print on them. Your gloves, curtains and other small accessories can also be of the same print. Glasses, cups, plates and other cutlery can easily get the spring mood if they too have some fruity print to it.

Elle Decor lists fruit prints as a hot trend in both clothing and home decor this season.  It was refreshing to see such bright and fun prints featured in Elle as the magazine’s high-end design isn’t usually as playful. Fruit prints are so colorful and cheerful and I think they’re a perfect accent to spice up a home’s décor in spring and summer.

Use white Like in the Magazines

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-15-2011

One of the common feature on any home decorating Magazine is the color white. It seems white has become a favorite in interior designing and for good reason.  White is simply able to give your home that fresh and clean appearance you won’t find easily.

Like freshly washed laundry dancing on the line on a sunny day, this season’s white decor is a welcome sight. Just when we’re ready to fling open the windows, shake out rugs and scrub the memory of winter away, stores are responding by stocking tabletop accessories, throw pillows, furniture and more in crisp whites and soothing creams.

A few white accents make an enormous difference, so you don’t have to spend a lot on this update.

Lampshades

If you have one of those antique lampshades, its’ time you got rid of it. Instead, give your room that bright look by getting a white lampshade.  This will be what you need to transform your room into something more modern in appearance.

Pillows, rugs and blinds

With summer fast approaching, you can easily get your home ready for the season by replacing your pillow rugs and blinds. Substitute heavy colors with white or cream to create the perfect summer atmosphere.

Looking for Inspiration? Grab a Home Decorating Magazine

Posted by Jade Martins on Jan-12-2011

While the internet is almost an endless source of inspiration for those who want to decorate their homes, nothing still beats the feel of home decorating magazines. The main reason for this is that we don’t spend all of our time facing the computer looking for design ideas (yes, work can be such a distraction) but with home decorating magazines, you can just pick them up whenever you’re not busy and browse through.  Another big plus is that you can bring those home decorating magazines anywhere to show people what it is you like done.  I know this can be done by printing stuff off the web but it’s just not the same.

Here are some tips for choosing which magazines to buy:

1. Stick within your budget – Some magazines are high-end and the furniture and other effects featured in them come with price tags we couldn’t hope to afford. Recreating those looks will be difficult. Choose a magazine that exemplifies your style but with suggestions for finding pieces within your price range.

2. Consider your space – If you have a large home, using a magazine that features furniture for smaller spaces is not going to work. Your project will go over budget trying to fill all the available space. The same goes for small spaces. Large bookshelves and armoires will not leave you much room to walk around your home.

3. Consider your style – While Country Living magazine may have great rooms, if country style is not for you, then that magazine won’t help. Choose your style and then choose your magazine not the other way around.

Red, Red, Red!

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-29-2010

Elle Decor magazine has just posted a trend alert.  That alert is the color red! That’s right folks, no muted colors here, no strange color combinations, just pure and unadulterated red!

From cloth to the rugs, to the floor, walls and even the furniture, the new color for 2011 is red.

It’s a pretty nice color setup if you manage to pull it off correctly.  Since it’s a base color, a solid shade will probably be your best bet when home decorating with this idea.

Every room in the house can benefit from a splash of the color, even in the bathroom, your dispensers can come in the bright color themselves.

Best Gift Guides in Home and Garden Magazines

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-24-2010

Which home decorating magazine reigns supreme?  Another gift-giving season is coming to a close and now we take a look at which magazines presented the best gift guide for home decorating.

On top of the list is Martha Stewart Living magazine.  What else can be said about Martha? She’s been in the business for the longest time and her gift recommendations are considered gospel by most of her readers.

Another magazine that offered a superb gift guide for home decoration is Elle Decor Magazine.  Even though the suggestions are a bit on the expensive side, they’re excellent choices for those who can afford them.

Next we have Good Housekeeping Magazine. This magazine is basically a staple for those who want to decorate their homes and I have to admit, their gift choices are pretty good.

Interior Decorating and Photostyling

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-20-2010

I read an interesting article earlier on the Blulabel Bungalow which contained interesting photostyling tips from Annette Joseph. To those that don’t know what photostyling is, it’s the art of styling a room to look its best when photographed.  Those photos you see on home decorating magazines? Well, those are some perfect examples of photostyled rooms.

These tips were pretty interesting but I got to thinking, if I took those photostyling tips and applied them to my own interior design, would it work?  Well, I’m trying those tips out to see if making the rooms photogenic will actually make them comfortable to use.

Here are some of the tips that Annette Joseph shared:

Photograph your rooms in slices. Looking at your room in a photograph gives you a more objective view of the room.

When photographing multiple room, use a color thread throughout each space to make the photo story come together.

Less is More.

There are a lot more tips that she shared and I think that they’re actually pretty useful in real life applications of interior decorating.
