Does anyone have any home decorating ideas?

Posted by Jade Martins on Jun-14-2010

I have no decorating sense but I know I like contemporary style. I’m trying to get some color scheme ideas and suggestions. The walls in my home are all white and all the floors are carpeted with a light tan color. Can anyone with some great fashion sense give me a great layout idea of how to decorate my living room and bedroom? Please feel free to get as detailed as possible and suggest links and websites to see easy contmporary decor ideas. Oh my living room and bedroom both have two sit-in bay windows in them if that helps. Thanks in advance to all that respond.

Maybe it would be good to answer your question with questions. How large are your rooms? What are your favorite colors? Are you going to be buying new furniture, or using what you have? Do you like modern art? What are your hobbies, do you like the ocean or the forest?

If you take time to get to know you, you could perhaps find a direction. Starting with a color scheme and then what style of furnishings, is storage something I need more of, and so on.

There are numerous web sites and you can quickly become overwhelmed. So take the time to answer these questions and I am sure you will find a direction. Sometimes just knowing what we DON’T like, is a big help.

Good Luck with your project, I am sure you will do a great job!

its just that I want to play around with some home design ideas with my house for a small addition, & I need some kind of basic program to use. Thanks!

I know they can be hard to find. I think Lowes has one on their website, I used it for a kitchen once, but it takes some patience. I have always done my design ideas in The Sims 2, because it is much more user friendly and quick. I never really get around to playing the actual game though. The only problem with this is sometimes the location of things isn’t exactly where you want it, but it’s a good way to get the idea of what you want to do.

3 (weird?) Ways to Discover Your Design Style

Posted by Jade Martins on Jun-14-2010

Sometimes life goes by so quickly that certain people do not take time to find out what they truly love. Instead, they just follow the crowd.

Take a moment to think of your home. Does it truly reflect you “as a whole” or do you just have little spurts of your design style within the room? For example, do you love the way your living room looks as an entire design, or just a few items within the room?

Here’s a tip that most people find surprising:

when decorating your home, consider looking at your desired lifestyle not necessarily your current lifestyle.

Perhaps you want to travel, but do not currently have the money to travel – well DESIGN your room to nourish your dream. For example, you can frame and display pictures of places that you wish to visit.

Perhaps you live in a hi-rise apartment building in the city, but love the countryside; well transform your rooms as your escape to your peaceful countryside. You may even want to add a rooster as an accessory (um, not a “real one” for your neighbors may not appreciate it) to enhance your country house “home”.

Here are 3 unconventional places that can guide you to find your TRUE CURRENT design style:

Your photo album

You may have had a great time in the 90s, but do you want your rooms to still look like the same decade. Look at your photo albums and then view your home. Has your hair style changed and your home style remained the same? It may be time to upgrade to your current style.

Your closet

Peek-a-boo, does your room reflect you? Look within your closet – do you have clothes that you love to wear or that you feel you have to wear. Go for the former and dress your home how you want to wear it. Choose items for your home that you love to have, not that you have to display.

Your favorite fun TV shows

Favorite TV shows are a good guide to your personal style. Now this doesn’t mean that if The Simpsons are one of your top fun favorite TV shows that you should decorate your rooms in a whimsical way, but it reflects that you LAUGH the most and HAVE FUN the most when viewing this show. So show your FUN side within your home (sarcastic humor, conservative humor, silly humor, slapstick humor, etc.) with color, patterns, artwork, and hobbies displayed within your room.

Decorate your room to reflect what would make YOU smile when you walk within your room. Don’t worry about naming your design “style”, concentrate on what makes you feel happy within a room.

Diverse Uses For Metal Garden Trellis

Posted by Jade Martins on Jun-14-2010

When it comes to both indoor and outdoor decorating, my wife is a very crafty and creative person, but sometimes I tend to forget this, so when she came home the other day with a metal garden trellis I thought she had lost her mind, as well as wasted a good chunk of money. However, she has quickly schooled me in the ways of the metal garden trellis (to steal and modify a line from an all time classic). Since she brought home this metal garden trellis I have learned that there is more than one use for them.

Depending on your preference, you can choose to set a metal garden trellis up to accentuate the beauty of a garden or you can use it to be the main attraction in a bland area of your yard (perhaps a place where plant life does not grow to well), or you can forego the usual outside manner in which metal trellises are used and set it up inside to give a room a more outside feeling. From this point in the decision making process, the sky is the limit as to what you do next. You’re only limited by your own imagination.

Less creative individuals, like me, often opt to put a metal garden trellis to use in the original manner it was created for – in a garden. Though it might not be as original as what some might do, the outside garden trellis is still a popular staple of gardens all across the nation. These trellises add a dimension and texture to gardens that might need a little brightening up, or can do the same for any outdoor area.

A very popular use for trellises is to let vines grown on them. Vines often lead to trouble in some gardens though because they can grow haphazardly over your fence or the side of your house, and even your lawn furniture. However, if maintained properly, they can be used as very attractive foliage if pruned and not allowed to grow hither and thither. It is possible to maintain the old world feel of a trellis while maintaining the control of growth! Anyone who tells you differently is probably to lazy to put in the effort to do so.

If you’re not the garden-type, you can still use a trellis to improve your yard. Even the most abysmal lawns can be made to look better with the simple addition of a trellis, which can create a more inviting outdoor space. You can also use the trellis to define a certain area of your yard, either front or back. It can be the backdrop to a swing chair or other type of lawn furniture. Throwing a scene such as this together can create a peaceful area in which to relax with a book or just observe nature.

Now if you’re the type who wants to bring the outdoors inside your home, then consider using a metal trellis as the headboard for your bed, or modify it so that it can be used as a candle holder; again, your only limited by your own imagination.

Closet Doors Dare To Be Different

Posted by Jade Martins on Jun-5-2010

You’ve just spent a considerable amount of money on the interior of your closet, installing a closet organizer to assure that your shoes, ties, belts, scarves, dresses, shirts and slacks are all easily accessible. As nice as the interior of your closet now looks, you don’t want the effect to be spoiled by a door that doesn’t do it, or the rest of your bedroom, justice.

How big is your closet?
Of course the type of closet door you have depends in large part on the size of your closet. If it’s a wall closet – very shallow – then of course you’ll need a different type of door then if it’s a walk-in.

The four types of closet door, therefore, would be the simple panel door that opens outward and lets you into the walk-in closet, bifold doors that let you view your wall closet, and the sliding doors which could be used for either version, depending on the length of the closet itself. The accordion door is also a choice.

Bifold doors would allow you to use over-the-door system to store shoes, for example – which would not work with a sliding door. Sliding doors can look more attractive than bifold doors, however.

Matching or contrasting colors?
Of course the first thing you’ll have to decide about the door is its color. You’ll need to find a color that will match your bedroom walls, or set it off in a striking manner. If you’d like to give your bedroom the illusion of greater size, than you’ll want to get mirrored doors. And for that really elegant touch, you can even get sliding frosted glass doors.

And you’ll have to give some thought to the future, of course. If you like to change the color of your bedroom every now and then, you won’t want to have to change the closet door as well because it would clash with your new decor.

Vinyl or wood or what?
And what should your closet doors be made of? You’ve got a lot of varieties to choose from: stamped steel, hollow core, super-thin wood, or solid wood. Solid wood doors give you the most variety in their design, for you can have them hinged, folding, sliding or with pocket applications. These doors can have flat panels – to which you can affix mirrors or fabric, or louvers. (Kestrel Wood Closet Doors is one company that offers solid wood doors of high quality. They also do custom doors.) For mirrored closet doors, Fort Glass (fabricators of Stanley Mirror Doors) are one provider out of several that you can investigate on the web.

There are so many choices that you won’t want to rush into your decision. Take your time investigating sources on the web, visit such stores as Home Depot or Menards or the specialty stores in your area. You can also take advantage of open houses in housing developments to go in and visit these houses and see the way those closets and bedrooms are designed. You’ll then be able to make an informed decision.
