Home Decorating and Interior Design Ideas

i was having this conversation with my mum yesterday, and she was giving her opinion to why she does not like living in canada (we used to live in england).
she said that everything (or so it seems) is revolved around your house in north america. she watches home television shows where they decorate the house, buy the house (etc etc) and it seems as though canadians and americans want huge things in their home such as office, big basement, games room, 3 bathrooms, 4 bedrooms (even if theyre only 2 people living in the house)

then in europe, a big house isnt as important. i remember living in england, we lived in a small home and every weekend we went to the beach, to the sea!, we drove places because not everywhere was too far from eachother.

maybe this doesn’t make sense.
but it’s true! everybody lives differently, but why does it seem as though canadians don’t enjoy the european lifestyle? :S

They have the room for it, we don’t. That’s as simple as that and for the last two hundred years they have been enjoying all that space. Any of the big European countries have twice or more people than the most populated US state (California). And California is bigger than the UK.
Just a few examples, Texas is bigger than France but with less than one third of its population.
UK is slightly smaller than Oregon but has 20 times its population.
When you swing your arms in those states you don’t risk hitting you neighbour in the eye.

You can add as well the latest fad to have as big a house as possible as a status symbol but this race for bigger and bigger has stopped with the fall to death of the housing bubble and the economy. But still US and Canadian houses are bigger than ours in general.

Decorating With Style

Looking to make your home beautiful? Maybe you think that it isn’t possible to do more with because of its size, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Any space can be made to reflect your personal style, even if it can’t duplicate it perfectly. A studio apartment can’t be the Taj Mahal, but it can utilize some of the same stylistic elements, working with its own strengths.

The first question you must answer is what your style palate is – this will become your style palette. That is to say, what is your taste, what appeals to you, you will then carefully splash these elements through your home – smartly. You may enjoy the clean lines of Japanese decor, or the gilded opulence of Versailles may be more your speed. Whichever end of the spectrum, remember that if it speaks to you, then feel free to

incorporate it.

After you have determined what direction you want your home to take, the next thing you have to realize is that there are no rules. This is your space, your domain, and anything goes. Having said that, know that there are some gently suggested guidelines that you may choose to follow, or at least consider.

1) Overstuffing a space will always make it seem smaller – if you are dealing with a small space, accessorize sparingly, or at least wisely. The exception to this rule is, of course, if you are trying to make a small, cozy space, like in a study, then you want to close in the space warmly.

2) Mixing different styles and artistic textures, is permitted, even encouraged. BUT, doing your entire apartment in French Country, then slapping a retro 50′s atomic kitchen clock on the wall does not gel. If you want to incorporate different aesthetics into your look, you have to do just that – incorporate them.

3) Color is your friend. Even if you are looking to do a spare, modern place, a few well-placed points of bold color, or one wall of a room, can make the look pop. Or, a monochromatic black/white schema can benefit from adding a pale gray-green or steel grey. Don’t be afraid of painting; you can always paint it back.

The most important thing to realize is that you can not screw it up. If you aren’t satisfied with the look, keep layering. You will eventually get it how you want it, and the results are more than worth it. Choose your lighting and furnishings according to your tastes and the above rules, and you can’t lose.

Creating a country kitchen design means having a casual, friendly kitchen space with some antiques or reproductions where family and friends can gather to enjoy wonderful dinners and great conversation. No longer just a place to prepare meals, the kitchen may function as the most popular room in your home.

When creating a country kitchen design, you should feature natural materials and colors and have comfortable furnishings that are warm and welcoming. Country kitchen examples are to use open shelves, plate racks and cupboards for storage for items such as stoneware pots, glazed earthenware, baskets and glass jars. Your antique or reproduction plates and dinnerware collections can also be displayed on open shelving. Pots should be made of copper, cast iron or stainless steel without ornamentation.

Cabinets can be made with aged planked surfaces, natural materials with a rough or distressed finish and round or ceramic knobs that will add to the country style. Cabinets or furniture made of a painted, distressed or naturally-finished pine can be a beautiful key element in country kitchen design.

The materials and their colors used for the floor and countertop are important elements to have a country look. For the countertops, use ceramic tiles, hand-painted tiles, slate, stone or marble. If you decide to use laminate countertop materials, select plain colors for coverings. Terracotta tiles, brick, stone and wood are popular flooring materials in country kitchen floors.

Since most home buyers consider kitchen islands an essential part of a desirable kitchen, be sure to include one in your country kitchen design. The island in the kitchen reminds us of the farmhouse kitchen where the work table was used to do most of the food preparation work. If space is very limited, consider choosing a rolling butcher block that can be moved to the most convenient location as needed.

If there is space for kitchen furniture, consider using some antiques or reproductions in your kitchen. And the antiques do not have to be perfect. If chips and scratches exist, all the better since these imperfections only will add to the charm and unrestored look of the furniture. Having some wear and tear to maintain the country kitchen design flavor is fun and it works!

The country look is always rustic, old and warm and colors used in this style of home decor must be selected carefully. Neutral colors such as white or bone can work well as can earth tones, red barn, blues and greens. All are appropriate colors for country-style home decor.

Country home decorating frequently uses stenciling and wallpaper. Stenciling can be used around windows, in the areas where the walls and ceiling meet or even on the floors. Stenciling also can be used effectively on furniture to add charm to a country-style home decor.

To really create a great look, you can even add a fireplace to your kitchen for a charming country-style home decor look. You will find you have many to choose from including free-standing ventless fireplaces that can be simply positioned where you want.

Planning is an important part of country kitchen design before you actually do the work. Organize your ideas in a notebook as you accumulate them. Have fun as you go through books and magazines, visit local showrooms and search online for country kitchen examples and ideas that you like.

Well-designed unique country kitchens add value to homes. Even if you do not intend to sell your home anytime soon, having a country kitchen design that reflects your personal style means you will have a very special place to enjoy for many years to come.

Picking a Color Scheme for Painted Dollhouses

Posted by Jade Martins on May-21-2010

Many artists enjoy decorating dollhouses as much as they do building them. Doll house paint schemes have no limits, and the license to be creative is free. Painted dollhouses give the artist an opportunity to express their own personal tastes and styles. Here are several suggestions to keep in mind when you are trying to plan and design the colors for you doll house paint scheme.

Remember, the interior and exterior colors should complement each other. Being able to see the interior and the exterior at the same time is one feature that makes dollhouses unique. You wouldn’t want one to take away from the other because the paint schemes clash. The paint chips at your local paint store will often show innovative and creative complementary color schemes. Use these for ideas. Additionally, many tools online will help you choose complimentary colors. You may be surprised to see the wide range of creative possibilities that are available to you.

When your miniature house is a replica of an historical building then color selection is very important. The color scheme can lend an air of credibility to your replica, or if it’s inaccurate, it can take away from the piece. If the mouse is supposed to replicate a particular historic building, make sure that you have access to some kind of pictorial representation of what the original looked like. The closer your color scheme is to the original, the more believable your piece will be.

If you are creating an original structure, then feel free to be creative in choosing the doll house paint that you want to use. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. Original pieces provide a template for you to utilize your full creative ability. Use whatever scheme you think looks good. Remember, painted dollhouses say as much about the creator as they do about the art form.

Creating a dollhouse to give away as a gift is one of the greatest joys that a miniature house builder can have. In the instance that you are going to give one away though, you need to take a few minutes to think about where the dollhouse is going to go before you select the doll house paint and color scheme. If it does not match the room where the dollhouse will be displayed, then it may feel clumsy in the room. Painted dollhouses that do not compliment their surroundings can look awkward and out of place. Make sure that you are confident that the color scheme will fit well with the dollhouses new home.

Beach wedding, beach themed reception @ home?

Posted by Jade Martins on May-20-2010

My Fiance and I are planning a beach wedding for April of next year (in Myrtle Beach, SC)! I want to rent a huge house and have the wedding on the beach, right outside of the house then have a cookout / reception there. My Fiance and I are not the "fancy" type ..we are jeans & t-shirt kind of people but I DO plan on wearing a wedding dress. My questions are, how should I decorate the house for the cook-out reception? And would it be okay to do a beach themed reception when we come home? We live in West Virginia and will be having our reception at the Knights of Columbus banquet hall.
Also, is it okay to skip the dancing at the house – besides the fun party dancing after a few drinks.. and save the first dance, father daughter and all that for our reception at home?
I’ll check it out when I get home. Work has YOUTUBE blocked! :-(

I always say…. do what you want!
Some people follow all the traditions and others follow none.
I say decorate the house however you like. It can be elegant with candles, white flowers, and greenery. It can be crazy and fun with bright colored flowers and a fun cake to match.
I say do what YOU want as this is YOUR day. Have fun :o )

Have you seen that dance entrance video on youtube? See the bright flowers, dresses, and glasses? Endless possibilities

If you’ve not seen it… go to youtube and type
JK Wedding Entrance Dance

*I can’t see why it would be a problem to save the first dance and all that good stuff for the big reception back home.

I’ve done weddings with two receptions but usually they are the same day and the more formal one is where they do the dances…but searching the web it seems peope are just doing what they want. At the second reception, some wear their wedding dress again, some wear another less formal dress, some just call it a dinner party. So… it seems that anything goes. Just consider the wording on the invitation to let people know what type of event this is. Well, that’s my two cents anyways
