Wall Paints – Various Colors, Textures, and Patterns

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-27-2010

The earliest appearance of paint was approximately thirty thousand years ago. There are still some caves today where graphics and pictures can be found that were drawn using paint. Color has fascinated cultures throughout history. Some cultures used colors for healing purposes.

Paint is made up of a pigment, a binder to hold it together and with thinners it makes paint easy to apply. We use paint to help preserve, decorate and add function by covering a surface with a protective coating.

Before the nineteenth century, the word paint only applied to oil bound types. Those that were bond by glue were called distemper. The first synthetic dye was discovered in eighteen fifty-six and was produced inexpensively. It was during this time frame that linseed oil began being mass produced. By eighteen eighty, Sherwin Williams produced and marketed paints in tins in a wide range of colors. With their success, the paint was exported all over the world.

Americans have been practicing the green revolution for a long time. They started having concerns around nineteen fifty regarding what chemicals and solvents were being put in paint. In nineteen seventy lead and mercury was outlawed and could not be used in the manufacturing of paint. A major difference in modern wall paints is the change from linseed oil to alkyd oil which is generally derived from soybeans. The use of synthetic resins such as acrylics and epoxies have become prevalent in the last thirty years.

Wall paints are the easiest and least expensive way to change the entire look and feel of a room. Your stark cold walls can be transformed into a sophisticated ambience of color and texture. It seems to breathe new life into the room with harmony and design.

Scientists have proclaimed that color affects us psychologically and certain paint colors provide either a cooling effect while other colors give us a sense of warmth. Some warm colors are orange, red and pink, while blues, greens and violets are thought to be cool colors.

Choosing just the right color and finish can be confusing and challenging. Here is a color and finish vocabulary to help you figure it out:

• Hue – The base of a color. Lighter or darker variations are still the same hue.

• Value – The lightness or darkness of a color.

• Shades – Colors with values closet to black, the darker reds and so forth.

• Tints – Colors with values closet to white, the lighter blues and so forth.

• Tone – A color’s intensity brightness or dullness.

• Flat Paint – Is the standard paint for walls and has the lowest sheen available.

• Satin Paint – Has a slight sheen and is easier to clean then flat paint.

• Semi-Gloss Paint – Is highly durable and easy to clean. Great for kitchens, bathrooms and children’s rooms.

• Gloss Paint – Has a high sheen and is used in areas that are susceptible to getting dirty.
This is great for doors and door frames.

Paint can also be mixed with a glaze to create various textures and patterns. This process is referred to as faux finish and is quite popular with home owners and interior designers. Washes are simply latex paint that has been thinned with water to produce color that is more delicate then that of a glaze. Washes also show brush marks which add depth and texture to your surface. There are other techniques that create unique charm and characteristics such as sponging, stippling, rag-rolling and color blocking.

Your first step before actually painting should be to take measurements of the area and calculate the amount of paint you will need. Then prepare your walls for painting. Patch all holes and allow spackling to completely dry. You must also remove any loose paint and sand uneven edges. Please don’t forget to cover the furniture and floor and remove light switch and outlet covers. A primer may be needed if your walls are new or show a lot of damage. You should also seek assistance from your home improvement store. They deal with this daily and can offer valuable advice.

It is best to take small steps and before too long you will feel like a professional and show off your technique on every wall in your home. At the end of the day as you look around you will be amazed at how a little color, texture and pattern will change your world.

Where to Start When Considering Home Remodeling?

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-27-2010

If you’re a home owner, you’re bound to try your hand at some sort of home remodeling job. Home remodeling does not necessarily mean installing new counter tops or putting in central air. It also applies to updating your decorating, such as a new coat of paint on the walls or a few new items of home decor. However, if a major project is in your immediate future take head of a few things before you begin.

First of all you will want to decide what sort of home remodeling job to take on. If your mother-in-law is going to move in, building an additional room or rooms makes sense. But if you’re just itching to update your home and want to get remodeling, some changes are more worthwhile than others.

Still unsure of how you want to change your home? The following five popular home remodeling projects will stir your imagination and increase the value of you home.

Adding Central Air and Heat

One of today’s big selling points for homes is the addition of central air and heat. Other air and heating options were widely used in the past, but if your home continues to operate on a swamp cooler, it’s time to update. You will find that your electric bill will be lower too!

Kitchen Changes

If you’re looking to update your home there is no better area to start than the kitchen. Update your appliances, replace the cabinets and add new counter tops and watch the value of your home skyrocket!

Insulation for Increased Energy Efficiency

When deciding on a home remodeling project adding insulation can be overlooked. But if you own an older home this is a must! Why let your hard earned dollars fly out the window because of poor insulation? It’s an easy fix and your wallet will thank you.

The Addition

One of the most classic home renovation projects is adding on a room. Now, this job sounds a bit intimidating and for good reason. Not only does adding an addition or extension take a great deal of time, it requires a great deal of money. Take time making good plans and an addition or extension will dramatically increase your home’s value.

Additions and Extensions

Adding another room or rooms to your home is one of the oldest forms of home remodeling. However, adding an extension can be costly as well as time consuming. Good planning and proper timing can make adding an extension to your home both practical and cost-effective.

Curb Appeal

Curb appeal is not only a quick way to add immediate beauty and interest, but simple and something most home owners can do on their own. Landscaping is a popular home renovation project because of its simplicity and immediate added home value.

Regardless of the remodeling project you decide upon, you need to first consider a few key questions that will determine if said project is a fit.

*How will this update increase the value of my home?
*Are these changes going attract or deter potential home buyers?
*Is the time and cost really worth the final outcome?

One of the biggest possible in the realm of home remodeling are mistakes. When beginning to remodel your home it’s tempting to bite off more than you can chew. Understand all details of your project before signing on. When in doubt, hire it out. The following projects may require a professional:

*Electrical work
*Plumbing
*Roofing or Chimney work
*Demolition

Did you know that proper timing of specific projects make an enormous difference? Timing is actually one of the most important factors when starting a home remodeling project. A few of the following tips can truly make or break your remodeling plans:

Do you want your kitchen torn up during Thanksgiving or Christmas? Keep holidays and any other important event in mind before beginning a project.

A more obvious issue is that of the weather. Even if your home remodeling job is indoors, the weather can still significantly affect it.

Are you financially prepared to commit to remodeling project? Much unnecessary anxiety and conflict could be avoided if a home remodeling project was just postponed. Your home is not going anywhere and the needed updating will still be there when you are ready financially.

Last, but not least is committing to a time line. If you are doing the work yourself it’s easy to get consumed by other life events and let your home remodeling sit. Not only does this make for a constant mess, but your chances of staying within budget decrease dramatically.

Summary:

If you’re a homeowner, you will most likely participate in some sort of home remodeling project. Home remodeling includes updating kitchen appliances, installing central air and heat or painting your dinning room a fresh color. Regardless of project taken on, keeping in mind your time line and budget will help you achieve your goal with the least amount of problems possible.

Add Color to Your Home With Accessories

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-27-2010

It is much more fun to live in a home that has some splashes of color as opposed to one that is decorated strictly in neutral tones. Most contractors and interior designers stress that people who plan to remodel their homes should not invest in outrageous or bright colors for the more permanent features. You might have a beautiful home but if decide to install bright red vanities, a purple refrigerator, and paint the walls various shades of green, then you might have trouble trying to sell it. You do not need to give up on your love of color, however, just because you need to make sure you outfit your house in a resalable condition. Here are some great ways to add flair to your home without doing any permanent damage.

The bathroom is often one of the most boring looking rooms in the house. People simply do not have much of an opportunity to add color when the majority of the room is filled with the toilet, bathtub, sinks and the vanity. However, you can certainly spice things up with the bathroom furniture. These items are everything from the laundry hamper and step stools to towel racks and bathroom shelving units. Brightly colored rugs, towels, and shower curtains do a wonderful job of bringing life into this room. Get creative! It can really pay off and you will love your new bathroom.

For your bedroom, invest in colorful window coverings and fun sheets, comforters, and throw pillows for the bed. Since the bed is the main attraction, draw attention to it with light green sheets, a deep blue comforter, and bright yellow decoration pillows. Another option is to add color with the shades. One option is to have dark wood window frames with green transparent window coverings to create a look that really “pops.”

When you are decorating the other rooms in the house, try to look for fun rugs, if you have wood or tiled floors, and beautiful wall hangings. These could be paintings, decorated mirrors, or tapestries, depending on your wall space and your current decor.

Furniture such as vanities, bathroom cabinets, mirrors, fun shades, and tapestries are fantastic ways to brighten up your home. Do not despair when you have to install items that are only neutral tones. Add color and flair your own way!

I am decorating my home and I have done each bedroom in different colors and I just wanted to know if that is a sign of a bad decorator?

It depends on whether or not the bedrooms have direct exposure to other community rooms in the house. If they are on another level, that’s fine – but if they are off a hallway that leads to a family room and each one is completely different then I would keep the doors shut when company is coming.

I tend to do color charts for people who are redecorating their homes or making big changes. Get several paint chips from the store – pick out your favorites that will be throughout the main parts of the home. Then pick a other complimentary colors that work well with the main color. That way your home doesn’t look chopped up – it flows. There are many shades of each color – it’s pretty easy to find a green (for example) that goes with your other main color. Olive might work well with one palate while forest might look good with another.

Need Home Decorating Ideas?

I am in the process of redecorating my bathroom. I am thinking of a red and tan theme, however am too nervous to pain the entire room red. These are my inspired curtains, http://www.target.com/Home-Chenille-Window-Panel-Gold/dp/B001Q8XTKS/ref=sc_qi_collection_item_3?ie=UTF8&altString=Home%20Chenille%20Window%20Panel%20-%20Red%2FGold.

. What ideas do you have?

The curtains aren’t really red-red so I wouldn’t do red walls.

I would either do a goldenly beige like Pittsfield Bluff or a dark brown like Middlebury Brown (both Benjamin Moore).

Add Beauty To The Home With Elegant Vinyl Shutters

Posted by Jade Martins on Apr-24-2010

If you are looking to add beauty into your home but you are completely unsure of how to do it, then vinyl shutters may just be what you are looking for. You may think that shutters are only for outdoors but in fact they can be used just as effectively indoors too. So if you haven’t already, why not look into getting vinyl shutters today?

Vinyl Shutters and the Beauty They Bring

What is so great about vinyl shutters is the fact that they are inexpensive to buy, yet they look just as good as wooden shutters if not better. They even outlive wooden shutters by a few years and they can be painted to match any color that you need. This makes them ideal for use indoors as you will also not have to worry about painting in wet weather and you will not have the weatherproof the paint either. This means that it is cheaper to own vinyl shutters indoors than it is outdoors.

Generally vinyl shutters can be used all around the home. So, whether you need to decorate the windows upstairs or downstairs, it can be done. The shutters themselves come in a variety of different styles and they can be as simple or as detailed as you would like them to be. If you plan on decorating all the windows, it may be a good idea to think of different themes for each room. You do not have to stick to the same vinyl shutter for each window if you do not want to; just try to have windows within the same room as each other with the same designs and you should be fine. Different designs within one room could make the whole theme look a little too mismatched and that is not usually a good thing.

Always shop around for the right vinyl shutters for you. That way you will find the best deals for you and you could even save money too. Also another reason to shop around is because each place will stock a different design. Some people like to shop online as you can find hundreds of designs in a short amount of time. So, if you are pushed for time log on to the internet and that should help you out.

Overall vinyl shutters do come in a variety of types and designs and each one will add a different look. Some will look modern whilst others will look elegant and contemporary. So, decide what look you are after and that will help you to choose the right type of vinyl shutters to suit you.
