Ideas for *very safe* Christmas tree ornaments?
I have a baby and a dog who are both into everything. I need ideas for nice tree decorations that are non-glass, non-pointy, non-sharp, non-swallowable, non-enticing-for-dog (e.g. not made of food), and as non-breakable as possible. We already have an LED-lighted tree, so at least I don’t have to worry about bulbs. Looking for either store-bought – or – I can sew and do most crafts, so I’m willing to make them as well.
felt shapes, don’t use glue because pieces can be sucked off, I suggest cutting out the shapes you want in appropriate colours, stuff them if you like, embellish by sewing felt or fabric pretties on with strong thread. I also suggest keeping them up a little higher. Also make strings of yoyo’s. They are a circle of fabric, sew a running stitch around the edge of the circle, pull it up into a little puffy thing, you can stuff them and sew a button over the small opening where the gathers meet, with very strong thread. make many of them in many bright an shiny fabrics, sew them together, in a string and drape them over the tree or room, etc. If using buttons, best to keep them out of the little ones way. You can omit the stuffing and button, just sew the opening tightly. They will look just as good, but a bit safer for dog and baby. Also I would suggest making a basket of the same items, or stuffed fabric goodies for junior and the dog (separate baskets of goodies of course), to play with so they may just leave the real decorations alone. Just a thought. Distraction is better than a messy room and accident prone disaster area. lol have fun coz time is running short
When my children were small I made ornaments out of construction paper. I used Elmer’s glue-nontoxic and stickers. They were cheap and disposable. I still have one my son made when he was three. I’ve had it laminated and I treasure it.

I would get all kinds of wide ribbon and tie bows all over the branches. They would be secure and harder to get off than ornaments. I don’t think anything is going to be totally baby or dog proof though, but at least bows wouldn’t be dangerous. And there are so many glittery, pretty ribbons at the craft store. You could just buy a few yards of each.

go to the fabric store and you can buy the panels with ornaments on them and just sew and stuff. We made these for my brother when he got married 31 years ago and they get put on the tree every year.

put the tree UP on a table where little hands and paws can’t reach. I have ferrets and use a table. ( it means a small tree, but who cares, no one can take the ornaments off and I can have the ornaments I want.)

How about making salt dough ornaments? You bake them and then paint them, you can form any shape you want, just mix 2 cups plain flour, 1 cup salt and 1 cup water. Add half the water, then add more untill you have a firm smooth consistency, kneed 10 minutes, form ornaments, bake at 250 degrees untill completely hardened, cool, then paint! Louella
