How do I decorate my condo on a small budget?

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-6-2010

I am getting ready to purchase a 3 bedroom condo and I don’t have much money left to do deccorating. How can I make my home look fabulous on a small budget?

My roommate and I had the same problem. We’ve had a lot of luck with Craigslist.com, under "for sale" there is also a free section, furniture etc. I love Ikea, the Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Thrift stores and consignment shops it’s really hit or miss. Freecycle ( a group through yahoo, find yours at freecycle.org) also has a lot of cool stuff that people are giving away. JCPenny has a lot of sales that you can get decent quality stuff on sale at really cheap prices(things like linens, curtains, that sort of thing). Before your condo gets too full, pick the basics, wall color and drapes/curtains. It’s a pain to paint around furniture or have to move it.

keep the room simple and spacious. too many colourful and decorative objects will make your condo look messy. you can start off by purchasing curtains to match the colour of your walls:P

You could scour second hand stores for items, attend a few auctions, or make things yourself.
Go to the library and find some books, on budget decorating, then make a file of the things you like. See if you can’t duplicate them or search for them in the stores, mentioned above.

I don’t know where you are or what climate you have, but how do you feel about white wicker? It always looks dressy and it’s affordable. I would combine light tan wood–I’m not sure what it’s called– with it. Many places have sales around holidays, and Feb.14th is headed our way. If you can "make shift" till then, I think you’ll be greatly rewarded. Do you have friends that knit, crochet, do needlepoint, quilt, or embroidery? Employ their talents. Offer them an open house tour and a meal for their effort–you might have some takers.

For decorating on a budget, but retaining a great sense of style, you might want to look into giclee (pronounced, "gee-clay") paintings. These are high-end reproductions of original paintings – the good ones are very tough to tell apart from the originals. Here’s a site that offers some abstract ones at reasonable prices: http://www.bk-art.com.

Watch hgtv’s show Design Remix. It shows you how to redecorate your home with paint and what you already have to make the whole room look different. Paint goes a long way in changing the appearance of a room. Make sure you choose colors that will compliment your personality and the items you already have. Go to thrift stores, Big Lots, etc for cheap but fun decorative items.
