Decorating ideas for the home using paper?

Posted by Jade Martins on Feb-5-2010

I’m renting a small unit so my decorating possibilities are small.

Ive decided to decorate a few things using paper.

So far i have laminated sesame street calendar pics and used them as a wall decoration for my sons room.

Any other ideas, especially links to how tos etc would be great.

Im not looking for greeting cards but things i can decorate my house with paper, Id like to make a wallpaper for my room but have no idea where i can get a good template for this.

Also if you know of a link on free quality baby sesame street pictures that would be great!!!

THanks guys
Yeah im not allowed to add anything permanent, i am sticking things up with yellow tac atm.

Im not sure what a craigslist is, im in Australia.

Go to your local paint shop and ask if they have any old discarded wallpaper books. My local place will give you 2-3 of them if you ask. They are samples that are no longer available for purchase. Look though them for neat textures, and prints to match your decor. Carefully cut/tear the pages out and frame them with cute frames (plain black, brown, or white).

Check at second hand shops or garage sales for the best prices. Mix and match different size frames for added affect. You can also add matting inside to make it look really professional.

I have done this in just about every room of my house. I mix and match the colors and textures and even add some items to make them look really professional. Everyone that comes over cannot believe that I made them. Try it out.

Oh, and also, they have wallpaper books just for children’s rooms so I bet you could find some neat pictures for your son.

  1. Autumn Said,

I saw something really neat on a home show where a man found some old dictionaries in his grandfathers basement when he passed away and used the pages as wallpaper. He was a writer, so it fit his personality well. That’s something you could look at, if you or friends or family have any old books in boxes in their attic and basement, you could always find something you like and rip out the pages- especially if you’re looking for kid-themed ones like sesame street. Any DIY home decorating site would give you tips on how to make your own wallpaper.

Is your landlord opposed to you adding permanent items to the walls?

For free or cheap items check out your local craigslist.

As for a wallpaper for your room have you considered the brown bag technique? Bags are free and the finished look is quite nice. By adding a glaze or wax you can also add more depth to the finished look.

Paint is cheap. Look for mistake paints and try a faux finish. It adds depth and texture to a room.

Calenders or old books make for nice wall art. A collage of framed botanicals can be quite striking.
