Home decorating..Do you have any advice?

Posted by Jade Martins on Jan-7-2010

Hi!
I’m living in a pretty small apartment, but haven’t done very much to make it nice..(one room + kitchen). I like white, but the wallpapers are light yellow, and unfortunately that is nothing I can change..my sofa is dark purple..Any ideas? can I go for white curtains and carpets?
Do you know any good websites where I can find ideas?
Thanks!

I don’t think white curtains are going to show up against the pale yellow walls, and white carpet is not practical. If the wallpaper is a print pattern, you need to consider that when choosing a window treatment.

You didn’t say what kind of flooring is currently in the apartment. If your sofa is a solid, you might be able to find an area rug that has dark purple in it that would go nicely with your sofa. Of course, this option would call for a solid color window treatment, because your rug would be patterned.

Another type I think would look nice is a neutral colored (light beige or tan) sisal rug bound in a darker shade of the neutral. I see these all the time, and they are extremely versatile and durable. This would allow you to put some eye-popping, colorful pillows on that sofa. I think I like this idea better than a patterned rug.

If you need chairs or one chair, consider wicker from a place like Pier One. They have some small scale wicker chairs that are cute and good for a tiny area. The open style of the chair and the lightweight material is good for apartment living. It can fit into any style, whether cottage, casual, or contemporary. They aren’t very expensive, either.

Have fun fixing up your little place. Let it express your personality and be a haven for you, away from the cares of the world. Make it as comfortable and cozy as you can. Just because it’s small doesn’t mean it is inferior. Be careful that it doesn’t become "cluttered". Choose fewer items but make sure each piece of furniture, each accessory is just right for the space.

I live in a small home. Mine is larger than a one room and kitchen, but it’s still little. I have worked very hard to make it special. Many times I see something I like, but I say, "No…I don’t have any place to put that."
This is an attitude you have to cultivate for small space living. But you can still enjoy your home, no matter its size.

  1. Grandma6 Said,

There would be websites galore, I’m sure, but take if from an old pro and don’t go with white carpet. It will look nasty very quickly. I would also suggest finding some small pillows with yellow and purple in them to bring your couch and the wall colors together some, to make them make more sense. White curtains would work but are not very eye catching. Maybe you can find a print with the two main colors, like a geometric?
Don’t be afraid to do lots of color in a small apartment. It’s your place and you should get it as close as possible to your loving it! If it doesn’t feel good when you walk in, then it’s wrong.
