Modern Home Decorating

Home Decorating and Interior Design Ideas

I’m a 14 year old girl if that helps.
Needs to be modern, light, airy, colourful and spacious.
I’m on a budget of £500
Need bed and furniture, like a desk or drawers.
I love IKEA stuff.
By modern and colourful I mean this: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90118340

Although its a bedroom it needs to double as an office and private space.
Sorry should of mentioned its not a foster home as such.
Its a children’s care home for abandoned kids, orphans etc.
Oh and need wall paint.
ESL: Those wall-pop things are great!
But I’m in the UK so sadly I cant buy them :(
Its not a discount shop, its IKEA never heard of IKEA?

I would suggest a futon or click-clack that gives you seating during the day and becomes a bed at night. Opt for a computer type desk that has some shelving on top. Find a dresser that goes with the desk, pick out some bedding in the colors you like and use one of the colors for window treatment and throw pillows. Use decorative boxes or baskets to put stuff in. A lamp by your desk, and a couple of framed posters will help to put your individual stamp on the place.

Are there consignment shops where you might find furniture cheaper? What about checking ads in the papers? In the United States, people move all the time and sell what they do not want to move with them (college towns & military communites especially).

  1. ESL Said,

in the area of paint, you can check out these things called WallPops… They are big colored stickers that are removable when you want to move or change or remove them…. cheaper than paint, and they come in squares, circles, and stripes. Good luck! :)

  2. ANF Said,

Try the ICI website as they will give you some great ideas for colour schemes. You are very lucky to have not only a home but being allowed to furnish and decorate your own room is wonderful. I wish you a lot of luck and happiness in your home.

We have been foster parents and I know how important it is for you to have a place to call your own.

  4. Gill P Said,

Joanna, I am delighted on your behalf, that you are now in a protected environment. I must say I was worried over you.

Bedroom.. choose a nice light emulsion paint, you can go over it when you want to chage the colour.

Try and get what I know as a cabin bed with a desk underneath it. The staff will know what I mean, its like a top bunk with a desk and cupboard area. A computer fits superbly underneath.

Have a few posters on the wall with bluetack. it doesnt damage the wall and easily removed.

You COULD have a small armchair in the room, if its big enough. The room usually is. And storage of either drawers or stacking boxes.

    All the best honey,

my friend has just decorated her bedroom. she has just painted the wall plain white and then painted circles (in her favourite colours) on one wall using cheap tester paints. it looks really good and didnt cost too much either. also canvas wardrobes look nice and modern and are cheap compared to some. you can get them off ebay with shelves for around £20 (also from argos) and then you could also liven them up with some fabric paints!

  6. BARBCROFT Said,

keep your walls neutral colour add all the colour in the bedding /curtains and accessories. you don’t say how big you room is , if it big enough to take your bed /desk and wardrobe and there is extra space left buy a secondhand sofa bed, this will give you and friends somewhere to sit, and if your allowed to have friends to stay over thats a bed for them, you should be able to get one for about £50. if the pattern doesn’t match your room get a cheap throw and cover it. try local charity furniture shops they have some good buys. good luck, you’ll get quite a bit for your £500 if your careful

  7. Linda P Said,

I think the best way would be to buy stuff that you can take with you when you leave, for instance buy colorful curtains, spread, pillows, rugs, etc then you will decorated cheaply and be able to have it to go when you leave if they allow you to take it. You can always shop at the local thrift store and buy new paint to dress up any desk or other furniture you may have. You might ask the "home" if they have any contacts with getting stuff at discounts for their girls, you never know til you ask. Good Luck.

    Hello,

    http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_design_bedroom/article/0,,HGTV_3366_3700397,00.html

Here is a site that may be of some help.

What I’ve done with my own teens is I have purchased them bed’s in a bag for their room decor….my son that is 13 has posters on his wall and currently NO curtains I need to fix that!!

My other teen is 18 and she has a bed in bag she loves it and on her walls she has pictures she’s gotten from me some are pictures I have picked up second hand shopping for her room and others are from dollar stores too. Not sure if you have any of that in your location but I love them!!

I guess I love second hand things. I bought my son an expensive bed which he hated so I had gotten him a metal thingy that holds the matteress for twenty five dollars and he is in bliss with that bed instead of the $800 bed stuff I had gotten him and his brothers in the past that is another story the JOY’s of divorce NOT :(
My 19 year old son is in college and lives with his dad and is charged rent and for food too by his step mum and dad..jeez :P
My 15 year old son is living with his dad he thought it would be better for him….He sleeps in all the time and runs late for school ect… His dad & his dad’s wife thought they could put a cobash on it well moving doesn’t change one one has to want to change jmo…sorry about the information here as my teens would scream TMI (too much information…mom)

So enjoy yourself find some bedding you love and wall art that you love and hang it up and Lucky U get to paint U lucky Duck!! We can’t paint our walls here so they’re white….the joys of living in an apartment here in the good ol’USA lol..
    :D

So shop about for second hand things If U like and also purchase frames and if you have a favorite photo enlarge it to a 5×7 or 8×10 if you like or even if U do your own art frame it!!!
I have done that with my teens’ art work some of them are my favorite wall arts here!!

    Blessings,

    Laura

    p.s I loved what this said :
Decorating a girl’s room can be one of the best parts of having a daughter. But decorating a girl’s room can also be one of the most difficult—especially if you’re decorating a teen bedroom.

    found it here:
    http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/topics/article/0,2496,HGTV_22932_4014711,00.html

p.p.s I also have gotten wall border that I have hung up with thumb tacks so if I want to change them I can or if I ever move and want them to go along they can..
Also have a plant in your room too that is something one should have too and perhaps a fish too either a gold fish or a beta…if U can have an aquarmine that would be great too if it’s possible to have….I had one with dwarf african frogs in it and they were so cool to watch at night with the light on the aquarmine…Just some more ideas…
    Blessings,
    Laura
