Home decorating ideas?

I want to paint both my son’s bedrooms and I’m undecided which colors would look the best. My oldest son’s theme is sports, like a lot of bold colors such as red, blue, white, yellow, and orange. My younger son’s room is a dinosaur theme, lime green, cranberry red, and baby blue colors in his comforter. Any suggestions would help, BTW…the color of their walls now are white

I have been paint my place for a while now. It takes me time to think about it because once it goes up it is up. I have done my living room and bedroom an Arabic sand color. Now I’m trying to work on both of my boys too…also my kitchen. I was debating on keep it neutral beige so if I change the decorations later I wouldn’t have to change the paint. Here is a website that may help you. http://home.howstuffworks.com/decorating-kids-rooms3.htm
Also you can check out home depot…they have a computer where you can do sample wall colors in rooms.
Good Luck!

We are getting our home ready to sale and want to put something around the border of our above ground pool. We are leaning towards rocks and brick rather than a deck. Just want some creative ideas.

It is understandable that you want to add pool appeal. I am assuming that there is either a ladder or entry to the pool that does not include a sizable deck.

You are probably spending a lot of money on getting the house ready, so I would go with the least expensive, yet effective material for your pool boarder. Rocks come in so many colors and shapes and are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and they look good, too. A bricked area would be more expensive and a heck of a lot more time consuming to lay.

I recently surrounded a house foundation with 3/4" rocks that are gray with a pink tinge. I bought bags of shells at the dollar store and randomly and very sparingly spread the shells here and there over the rocks. We live on the water, so it blends in with the shoreline. I used the plastic edging to keep the rocks in place and so the lawn mower has an edge to run the wheel against without going over the rocks. Oh, I sprayed the area to be covered first with 50% vinegar and 50% water to disturb the ph balance in the soil so nothing will grow there and, it is all natural and will not harm anyone or anything, except the grass and weeds, of course.

Another idea is using sand or bark mulch in much the same way, but I don’t think sand will stand up to the test of time. Mulch is inexpensive and if you use the darker brown color, it could also look good.

I would also get some Shepard’s hooks and hang potted plants in pleasing locations around the pool. Show the house with a small float in the pool or a beach ball floating around. Drape some colorful towels over a chair, too. It sure would make me want to jump right in.

Moving… help!!?

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-28-2009

I live in a house by the beach in SC. We’re moving a couple blocks away to my now dead mother’s home. ( the house I grew up in) We’re moving on Sat. with my three kids, Nick 4, Tyler, just turned 3, and Nigel born in May. Also with My sister Tricia who is 16 and expecting a baby in August… sad I know. Any moving tips? We don’t know what the heck we’re doing with Trish but I do know that for the time being her baby and her will stay with us. ( she’s having a baby girl we think!!) So we’re really excitted even though its so sad that she’s having a baby that young. BACK TO MOVING: We’re moving and i need help!! Please! I’m 30 years old and my husband is traveling a lot. So I need to know how to decorate the house etc. We’re in the middle of the decorating and are going to finish by Sat. We will be completly moved out by monday when we’re setling our other house. Thanks for all the help and input!!!

Hannah, Kevin ( my hubby, Trish my sis, and my kids Nick, Tyler, & Nigel

Really thanks

Y’know? You’re going to be just fine. Your kids aren’t old enough to insist on specific colours or themes, they’ll be happy with anything cheap and cheerful. Your sister is pregnant – she may want to help as her nesting instinct will be kicking in soon and, at her age, she probably still likes to "play house". At least I did at that age – we moved when I was 16 and it was the first time I could pick out my own colours, draperies, linens etc. for my new room.

Kudos on helping her out, by the way! My best friend had her first baby at 17 and ended up marrying the father; they just celebrated their 25th wedding aniversary and have two beautiful children.

Now, it’s going to be hectic – moving with kids always is – so make sure you have lots of help. I would see if you can get someone to watch the little ones during the move so that they’re not underfoot. Label all your boxes VERY SPECIFICALLY – it will save time at the other end (I didn’t find my can-opener for four days). And remember you certainly don’t have to unpack in one day – or one week or one month, for that matter. Take your time and have plenty of soft drinks and snacks on hand (plus a bottle of wine for yourself at the end of the day, if you feel like it!). My husband travels more than he’s home, so I know what that’s like – I no longer consult with him on minor decorating decisions or purchases, as things need to get done promptly and he trusts my judgement. Not that I’d do the house in pink and orange, or anything, but new paint colours/flooring/draperies/furniture are all my choices and we like it that way.

Best of luck in your new home! I hope everything works out for you all.

i want to open a business in decorating, but do not have an interior decor degree. are there any deceraters out there that know?

you don’t have to have a degree in interior design to run your own decorating business.

it’s just like…

if i love to bake, and i’m really great at it, i don’t need to have a pastry culinary degree to open my own store.

it would likely be beneficial if you took some business management courses so that you have an idea on how to run a business, but once it’s up and running, then by all means, you can run it how you want, you are your own boss.

is the money better for interior design? i understand the differences between the two: designer must be licensed, can change structures, etc., but which is a more lucrative career path?

Your Interior Design Degree is the one that will make you more money, anyone can be a decorator, teachers and professionals will tell you that a decorator is someone with good taste, a designer is better educated and can do more.
