My home is very small. I call it The Hospital because it is stark white, white, white and I hate it: White walls, white kitchen cabinets; countertops; and floor tile; and white cheap vertical blinds. When you walk in the front door you see/walk into my living room right away and if you kept walking past it, you’d be in the kitchen. So when you open my front door you see the living room and kitchen in one fell swoop (and the "white" refrigerator against the farthest wall facing outward). The living room has a high ceiling. I’m so overwhelmed that I’ve done nothing in this hideous place because I don’t know what color(s) to paint it. Primary colors will make it look too small. I love traditional decorating–dark/cherry woods, etc. Any suggestions on wall colors; new cabinet/countertop colors, and new window covers? Did I mention the house is small?!!!
because its small, and the rooms kind of flow into one another, i think you need to go with the same or similar colors thruout the main areas. its hard to have different color themes in each room, when the rooms arent really distinctly separated. Id like to know what the color is of your living room carpet???is it white too? what color is the upholstery and wood of your furniture?
if you like the traditional look, then you should probably go with a pallette of browns: taupe, camel, sand, tan, moccha, espresso, chocolate. and the orangey browns: cinnamon, terra cotta, sienna, paprika. and the reddish browns: rust, russett, brick, sun dried tomato.
All these colors go well with dark cherry wood.
A hardwood or laminate floor in the kitchen in a rich cherry would look great.
if the ceiling of the living area is quite high, you might consider installing artificial beams to visually lower it and add some interest and texture to the room.
for something different, you could do away with drapes and curtains altogether and use interior shutters or roman blinds in a nice earthy material like bamboo or rattan.
