How do you decorate a one bedroom home that has the kitchen and living room attached?
We are moving into a one bedroom home and its very small the kitchen and living and dining area are all attached in a very small room. How do you make the space look bigger and how should I decorate it?
We are renting it so we cant do much painting on the walls
I just moved into an apartment same with yours 6 months ago. You may want to try what I did to the apartment:
I painted the whole ceiling flat white (not the shiny type). This gave the ambience of a wider space.
For the room, I painted the walls sky blue, I changed the bed linens to lime green. That gave the room a fresh and wider look.
For the kitchen, dining and living room, I chose analogous colors (3 related colors). For my apartment, I chose red, orange, and yellow. One wall is red to give contrast to the whole place and the rest of the walls are painted yellow with orange border line.
For the flooring, I picked plastic planks with light-colored wood design/pattern.
I suggest that you choose furnitures and fixtures that are minimalistic in design as the big furnitures will eat up the space.
For my place, I made hanging racks for the books and magazines.
After you paint the walls, get some border. Instead of putting it up by the ceiling, put it up in the middle of the walls. Put a mirror on one of the walls, so it reflects the light. Good Luck
References :
1. Put a large mirror on one of the walls. It gives the appearance that the room is larger.
2. Paint in light colors because dark colors make a small space look like a matchbox
3. Try using dividers, the kind with photos would be good to separate a living room
4. figure out where you want the room to transition and paint them different colors so it gives the appearance that you are leaving one space and entering another
5. The less stuff the better.
6. Go to IKEA.com and they have room designs based on how much square footage you have. They have great ideas for small spaces.
References :
Make all the walls a light color. Make sure that all curtains match. do not put down an area rug and don’t over power the rooms with to much bulky furniture and clutter.Make everything flow together.Don’t fill the walls with a bunch of clutter. The smaller the space the less accessories. Also with such a small living room. Do not have a center coffee table, have an outaman instead and this will also be extra sitting space. Only have side lamp tables.
