home decor dilemma.. i ve got no furnitures ???? :(?

Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-12-2009

we rent our home so we dont buy that much furniture since its difficult to move them around year after year. we now live in a 2 bedroom spacious apartment. while i love the extra space,
i dont have enough furnitures to decorate the rooms..
is there an easier and inexpensive way to decorate the house ?
i am cool with diy, but nothing complicated since we have a newborn at home. :)
thanks for your responses.

Your best bet is yard sales and thrift shops. You would be amazed at what you can find at drop dead prices. Go out and have fun and don’t forget the babies decorating too. :) Yard sales are a dream for baby stuff as well as furniture. Estate sales are great for antique furniture. Auctions are ok but can get pricey but can be good also if you are very careful. Good luck and enjoy yourself.

use cinder blocks with painted boards for tables, shelves, pantry, etc. They can be painted any color and can either be thrown away later or easily moved with you. Just be sure to not have boards just sitting on cinderblocks once the baby starts pulling up. Just place blocks over and under.

Also, get old sheets and lace to drape over or around windows. Also, if you can sew – do large pillows – lots of them!
They practical for sitting or resting or whatever – mix it up! If you can sew they would be easy to make!

Along time ago I just had a rug with a bunch of pillows around and and a tray to put our drinks on. We really liked it and the baby loves it that you and daddy are on the floor with him.

In addition to what others have said, I think that plants are great in any home, although they might be hard to transport every now and then. You could always give them away once you move though; I find myself getting attached to plants but oh well. :)

There are some species that grow well in semi-shaded areas, grow fast, and look great! I’ve also noticed that since my mom put plants in almost all of the rooms in our house (4-bedroom, 2 floors), the stuffy house smell doesn’t occur even if we are gone on vacation for a few days.

Plants are a great investment, and they shouldn’t cost too much either. Pots on the other hand, might cost a bit more if you’re looking for something unique. But check out a local Lowe’s and you’ll surely find a great plant (or more!) for your home.

    Good luck!

You might want to look into http://www.freecycle.org. I’m pretty sure that you will find some things to get you started. Sometimes you will find some really great pieces of furniture only needing some T.L.C., add some white paint to it and you can’t go wrong.
