Painted home office dark red–what complimentary colors to decorate it with?
Posted by Jade Martins on Dec-2-2009
The office looks great, rich dark red walls and creamy off-white trim. The desk in there is black with a cherry top. We also have a cherry bookcase. What colors should I incorporate in the rug, wall art, blinds, etc? I am buying all of that new and want to compliment the dark red while not making the room any darker. Thanks.
My kitchen is dark red! I love it.
I have cream ceiling and a darker cream on a wall. I also have greens & yellow accents with some copper & black iron decor on my walls. It all works well together.
With your red, keep with primary colors and you can’t go wrong.

Can’t go wrong with beige.

WHITE BLACK AND BEIGE..OR A WARMER TONED BROWN….

Shades of golden apricot will look stunning against the red, as well as coordinate with the cream trim.

Depends on whether you want the room lighter or darker. If lighter, then a yellow or beige. If you’d like it darker, then a rich brown.

Everything that I have read or seen on choosing colours, suggests going with a colour opposite on the colour wheel.
I think that would be green, sounds like they wouldnt compliment each other but in a rug and some other small details I’m sure it would look great. (I wouldnt go with a dark green..probably more olive-ish)

If you don’t mind an Oriental look,I would suggest and vivid Oriental rug with gold, red, black and beige tones. You could also put up some framed Oriental characters in black or white on the walls. Add some brass colored vases or desk necessities and a potted plant in a brass urn.

you can get a patterned rug, for sure, to break up the the solidness of the walls. cherry wood and dark red walls could take yellows, greens, oranges, copper, gold and even some tones of blue. for some reason i’m envisioning a floral pattern would suit the room for a rug, keep to gold frames for artwork, and match your window coverings to the rug. personally, i hate venetian blinds, unless they’re used as a background effect in an black and white movie – you should consider keeping to fabric and a thick pile rug to soften the room. you could have light fabric with touches of the cherry or red in it.

Black, white and silver looks stunning with red. A grouping of black & white photographs with white mat and thin black frame looks great. Silverplate or sterling picture frames, mint julep cups, antique baby cups, or any silverplate or sterling Silver. It is said that every room needs some black and some yellow. If you can work the same yellow in the room three times, it denotes harmony.
Good luck!

I think you need a pop of light color now. How about a light gold color or light green ( not pastels) Blinds- the creamy white color,curtains- creamy white with light gold, the rug- a creamy white color with red, gold, and light green accents on it. Throw pillows- mostly creamy white and solid light gold, wall art- something you can put a bunch of cream colored candles in ( like wrought iron), creamy white frames around art, maybe one accent gold framed colorful picture ( mostly the colors you’re using) lamp shades- gold with a touch of light green. like maybe green pin stripes on it or green trim around it. Hope this helped.

To lighten it up the feel try a bouquet of real or fake (but nice looking) calla lillies or other white flower with some green. Greenery from plants looks great against red and black. Silver or brushed silver accents look sharp and you can incorporate some green other greens as well but be careful about having too many different colours . Keep to black white grey red silver and use the brighter or other colours sparingly.

I would add natural earth colors…Green, Brown, Beige. Green and red are compimentary colors….Just make sure there are others to break it up….
