I would really like to start baking cakes. People tell me my cakes are to die for and I decorate them so pretty but the cakes from a recipe that is in a cookbook . I don’t want to get into trouble…so my question is "can I start a home business decorating cakes with recipes that i didn’t make up?

You cannot patent recipes. You can however infringe on the intellectual copyrights of the recipe. Ingredients cannot be copywrited…only the process or instructions. Avoid this by (A) not giving the recipe out and/or (B) changing the wording of the instructions. I would be more worried about having a home-based baking business without going through the proper health code channels. That wuill certainly get you in more trouble than thinking that someone will taste your cake and say…I KNOW WHERE THIS RECIPE CAME FROM!! Tell people your recipe is a secret.

I think I got a great deal on a new build home. Now it’s time for the landscape, wiring, and design center appointments. I’m cool in all areas except the design center. Light fixtures, faucets, etc, I can do myself. Is it smart to upgrade the counter tops, cabinets, sinks, etc (major items)? The costs of these items are rolled into the price of the home at closing. OR should I wait until my finances permit and do them myself? The only thing I’m sure on upgrading is the carpet pad.

Kitchen and bath upgrades (especially master bath) are key resale selling points. Also crown molding in the primary living areas is a big plus. Good luck.

It will be 30-40 people approximately. needing mostly decorating ideas and a great punch recipe – my colors are pink, white and silver

Michaels or Hobby Lobby will probably be your best bet. You can get beautiful fabric flowers in pink and white and some nice silver vases. They would make lovely centerpieces. Also, at my wedding we covered the tables in white table clothes. With colored table clothes we cut out a huge heart and placed in the middle of the table. Then we sprinkled confetti on all the tables. (my colors were white, blue and silver, so I bet pink would work just fine) It was beautiful.
Good luck on planning your reception!

Some help with frosting and then decorating a cake please?

Posted by Jade Martins on Nov-25-2009

what all do i need to decorate a home made cake? some easy n good ideas for a b’day cake decoration please

1) Before frosting the cake, brush off any loose crumbs.

2) If you are frosting a layer cake you can slice off the bump in the center and have the cuts face the center to create an even middle. The brown pan sides are cleaner to frost so should face outwards for a neater presentation.

If it’s a sheet cake, consider slicing off a bit to make it even & turning it upside down.

3) You can use a large flat cookie sheet or pizza pan lined w/ tin foil to work upon. Or if you are working on the serving tray, make strips of parchment paper to arrange along the edge of the cake to keep the tray clean. Pull out the strips when you’re done frosting.

4) Tubes of pre-made decorating icing a good for writing or use those sugar alphabet shapes.

5) Skewers or raw spaghetti noodles can be use to hold the layers in place and to create a tent w/ plastic wrap for storage.

6) Jam, lemon curd or pudding make good fillings for a layer cake & provide interesting contrast to the frosting.

7) Don’t mess w/ the frosting too much. Just apply a nice layer & leave it alone.

8) www.foodtv.com is a good resource for recipes & tips (especially Alton Brown).
