Any ideas how to run a contest that will promote my new interior decorating business?
I want to be able to set my own hours so I can stay home with my 3 year old daughter and hopefully soon a sibling. I am planning to start my own home based business helping others decorate/organize their homes. I was thinking some sort of contest where people could send in their worst or best decorating projects. Maybe I could get some of the local businesses(furniture/accessory stores) to participate and make a big media blitz or something. But I’m not sure exactly how to go about it. I also don’t really have any money to work with so I have to be creative. Any ideas? Also, where can I find wholesale accessories and furniture? Thank you!
You sound like you want to start your business and will go through with it, but you need to slow down. Start with doing a few jobs and establish yourself with local fabric and furniture companies. Get your name out there first and establish a clientele before doing any contests. I also believe that a great place to get started is with decorating for businesses around town. Their lobbies and waiting rooms reflect the company’s sense of quality.
After you do a few of these jobs, then your reputation, if it is good, will be enough to carry your business.

It will be hard as you say you do not have money to invest, but I can give you some tips.
If you want an inexpensive way to get a website to promote where people can attain your contact info, see pictures, estimates, submit their projects, etc then you can use a free hosting company called http://www.freewebs.com
You need no prior web design experience and should be able to set up a website within minutes through them.
Your next step as far as ways to market your business would be using classifieds ads at with local online directories. Just Yahoo the phrase "(your city) free ads" and submit your new website.
You can also make flyers that have your contact info and web address and post them around town on billboards, like your post office. And offer them to local design stores to give away and help you promote this.
I hope that helps, here is my Yahoo IM if you have further questions: JohnGuanzon2000

well you could always start off with building a website featuring your stuff, or hiring a company to build on for you.
I suggest going to :

They helped me getting my biz. started with banners and stuff for my site and now it’s booming. I’m sure the graphic designers their can match the taste to what you need at a cheap price too. Time is money, and making a biz is an investment too. So don’t be afraid to spend alittle, it’s all trial and error! Good Luck!!!!
Edit:
Btw- I’m sure they could also help you with promoting your stuff since they do multi media stuff so maybe you could talk with them to having your things in a magazine or TV ad.

Before I do anything like you’re asking I’d get some advice and counsel on starting up a small business in my home. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zipcode to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE. They’ll most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and their cost and force you to also understand all of the aspects of your interior decorating business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll go after them.
