Cheap and easy decorating tips?

Posted by Jade Martins on Nov-14-2009

We will be either living in an 1 bd apartment OR (crossing fingers) a two story townhouse if the waiting list works out. We will be on a very tight budget and will be taking on: old coffee table/end tables (wood), our 2 futons from college (metal frames), his mattress and bed frame from his home, and that’s about it… There is a giant flea market right down the road from where we will be living. Anyone have good tips for people like us who don’t want a depressing, empty place? We will be on a very tight budget since he will be starting work and I will be working anywhere I can since I plan on hopefully getting into a grad school for the spring semester. Any easy tips? Like for curtains, refinishing furniture, slip covers, etc. I will have lots of time until I start school (hopefully!) so I will be going bonkers with nothing to do. I am very good at crafts and working with my hands, and I can borrow my moms sewing machine is need be. We have contemporary taste with a modern edge.
FYI, we are getting married in spring so we already have bed set covered, basic appliances, etc (hooray for gift registries!). It’s only decor we are worried about (thankfully).
Not getting married this spring, but this JULY and hopefully moving in b4 the wedding. I do not know what is wrong with me tonight!

Congratulations on getting married soon!!!

Cheap tips I can give you that you can also get new stuff would be to check out dollar stores like Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, just any dollar store and also go to places like Big Lots
You’d be surprised what kind of items they sell. You should be able to find everything you’re looking for at those type of stores like furniture, slip covers, appliances, decorative things for your place like picture frames and other things.

You could try Free Cycle, a place where people list things they want to get rid of, sometimes you get great things there. Also Goodwill sometimes gets overstock items from stores like Target and sells them at a very discounted price. I have also found great prices on art prints at Ebay.

Take some of your pictures, his family, your family or of you two together and go to Walmart and copy them larger or different unique poses or even black and white. Buy matching frames, like black with white mattes and do a collage family wall (picture an art gallery). Their frames range between 2.00 to 5.00 and most have mattes already in them. The reprints are very affordable and best of all, you will blend the two families into one in a modern way.

paint often helps, look at the hardware store at the "mistints" pile, this is the perfectly good paint that people don’t buy b/c once tinted the colour is off for them, it is often sold at less than 1/3 of the regular price,
Flea markets are great, just make sure the furniture is solid, sit on it!! wiggle around, unless you are very bold stay away from stuff you would need to strip before you paint (a good primer helps a bunch when repainting furniture) Haggle!!
Sheets can make very pretty curtains, with some ribbon and creative tying you do not need to know how to sew , creative draping can rule!
Check out yard sales too, they are often cheaper than flea markets and at the end of the day people will often give you the stuff just to take it away,
Ask friends, relatives etc, you’d be surprised what people have stashed they don’t want to toss but would give to a good home, also the salvation army can have some good finds,
I like the dollar store too!

Like someone mentioned before, FreeCycle.com is good. Goodwill is great for furniture and stuff. For curtains, fabric shower curtains are the best way to go esp if your windows are long. I work at Big Lots and they have great stuff. Frames and candles are SUPER cheap. WalMart has a clearance fabric section where the prices are like one or two dollars/yard. You can do anything with fabric. Another cheap thing is make you own art. Buy a canvas ($5-10 at Big Lots) and some cheap bottles of paint at WalMart and make an abstract painting.. they do it all the time on Trading Spaces and shows like that and it looks like a million dollars when theyre done with it. Good luck!!

Freecycle is a good suggestion, or check out the "free" section of craigslist.

In terms of what to choose for individual pieces of furniture, just keep one thing in mind- choose pieces that you like, not necessarily what you think will "go" with the other items you own. If you go to that fela market, pick out vintage pieces that jump out at you as "cool", and don’t worry if they will match what you have. When you have different, distinctive pieces that you put together in a cohesive way, it will look ecclectic.

Stay away from cheap furniture, nothing made form particle board, laminate, or (gulp) plastic. They won’t last, and you’ll just have to wind up replacing them anyway.

Don’t be afraid of color, either. One way to fill an empty space is to paint the walls a rich color. Also, you can usually find cheap, but very cool original artwork on Ebay. There are tons of self-representing artists who sell their original works there, and original paintings always look rich and are interesting.

One really cool (and unconventional) thing I can tell you that I did was my window treatments. Curtains can be expensive, and blinds look cheap. But here’s what I did… I went to the local fabric store, and bought a few yards of Crafting Felt. It comes in a myriad of colors, and when you cut it to size, the fabric doesn’t fray… so no sewing! Then get some nice inexpensive curatin rods, and attach the curtains to them using "clip rings" (which you can also get at a local fabric store). When they’re hung, the fabric looks almost like velvet, and it’s oh-so-cheap.

    Good luck!

Congratulations first of all! Now pick a color scheme! No mor e than three colors! Paint first! Now look around and match your stuff to that paint. Curtains, pillows and lamps should match! Carpet as a 3rd color that pulls the whole room together. Even just a throw rug. No more than three colors. I do not know where you live but channel 52 here in Dallas always has great shows on decorating. But the bigger the place the lighting and plants play a huge role in that. God bless
