Has anyone started a small home business after retirement?
How did it work out for you? Any advice? I’m thinking of starting a cake-decorating business from home.
I’m not in retirement yet, but my aunt is. Like you, she is doing a food service business from home. I think you have a great idea that is very do-able for a home business. And retirement is a great time to pursue it.
If you haven’t already, I’d suggest that you start advertising your work by giving away free samples. If you have any parties or functions to attend that will be serving food, bring a couple of free cakes. When people see that you do a good job, word of mouth will spread. My aunt did this with her product–condiments–taking them to parties, restaurants, etc. and it started a frenzy!
Also, this a great time to tap the schools, since they have just started the academic year. Again, you can visit schools around your area with free samples of your work, especially cupcakes! Kids love them, and they are a big hit for birthday parties..
Or donate to fundraisers. Lots of schools have several fundraisers throughout the year.
If you have a heart for kids, consider also doing some cup cake decorating classes for them. Those are big hits too.
Hope you go forward with your business. Much success!
Cake decorating will be fun, I have helped with a few cakes myself and enjoyed it.When I retired I never made plans other than to be lazy and enjoy myself. That is what I am now doing. I hope your dreams come true. Poppy

Rumba girl I am with you. We own a working farm. For now it’s just chickens and we sell the eggs. You wouldn’t believe the people that want fresh eggs. We also sold garden produce this season. We didn’t get rich but the money helped out.
When I retire I would like to cater small venues. People tell me that I’m a good cook and I still cook as though I’m feeding an army. I just can’t portion for 2 or 3 people.
Go for it!
