what are the basics for decorating a home ?

Posted by admin on Nov-30-2009

in decorating a home , there are some basics for everything like colors , pictures , plants ,must do this , must not do that ,….etc.
so , what are these basics ?

To me it sounds like you’re looking for rules. So many decorators go on tv and tout what you should and shouldn’t do. Pfft. I say you do what you think looks good. What is pleasing to YOUR eye. You have to live there. Your house isn’t a show room.

My rule is that I pour my personality into my home. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my home and have had friends ask me to help them with theirs. I give them basic ideas but mostly I think they should use their own creativity and pour their personality into their homes.

One thing I personally hate is a very well decorated room but bare walls. ICK!! Photographs, artwork, etc. are a must in my opinion. But that is just MY opinion.

Don’t always rely on those supposed professional decorators. I once saw a professional decorator on tv paint hay onto a living room wall to give it texture!!! It was terrible! Professionals decorate with their own personal style so you must take everything they say with a grain of salt.

What’s a really easy wallpapering alternative?

Posted by admin on Nov-30-2009

The Back Story:
The town home was probably built in the late 70’s and decorated like it. The original wallpaper in the half bath was hideous so my finacee tried to remove it only to find an even WORSE wallpaper underneath. It’s now gone from "swinger suave" to looking like something my great grandmother would have picked out. Now we’ve only been able to remove a portion of THAT wallpaper because I think it’s become molecularly bonded to the sheet rock over all these years.

The Goal:
Cover up the walls in the half bath with, pretty much ANYTHING at this point.

The Problem:
I feel I lack the skill to wallpaper over other wallpaper successfully and we don’t have the budget to get some contractors in to do this for us. So I want to find some easy and inexpensive decorating ideas that will keep our guest from thinking that faded 3-foot sunflowers was part of some decorating motif.

Thanks.
We did try to score and use remover on the old paper. Now we have half-walls of paper with all these little track marks all over them that jump out like little teeth. Were there is no paper the walls have a paper bag like texture.

My niece bought an old house and had the same problem with layers and layers of wallpaper. She bought Venetian Plaster and did her walls. They look fantastic. She said it was simple to do and she isn’t the handy type. The kind she bought came in different colors so there wasn’t any painting involved. I found this website that gives you different methods, directions and pictures.

Good Luck

I want to be able to set my own hours so I can stay home with my 3 year old daughter and hopefully soon a sibling. I am planning to start my own home based business helping others decorate/organize their homes. I was thinking some sort of contest where people could send in their worst or best decorating projects. Maybe I could get some of the local businesses(furniture/accessory stores) to participate and make a big media blitz or something. But I’m not sure exactly how to go about it. I also don’t really have any money to work with so I have to be creative. Any ideas? Also, where can I find wholesale accessories and furniture? Thank you!

You sound like you want to start your business and will go through with it, but you need to slow down. Start with doing a few jobs and establish yourself with local fabric and furniture companies. Get your name out there first and establish a clientele before doing any contests. I also believe that a great place to get started is with decorating for businesses around town. Their lobbies and waiting rooms reflect the company’s sense of quality.
After you do a few of these jobs, then your reputation, if it is good, will be enough to carry your business.

I am a beginner sewer but my goal is to design clothes and to do some interior design projects. My budget is $100-$200. I want something that will suitable for designing QUALITY clothes. Is this possible with my budget? Any suggestions?

Couture clothes are usually made with a straight stitch only machine. If they use a machine at all. <g>

$100-200 is a very slim budget for a new machine that can be expected to last for a number of years, but you should be able to find a pretty good pre-loved machine in that price range.
(I wore out a $100 machine in less than a year 10 years ago.) See if your library has John Giordano’s Sewing Machine Book and Carol Ahles Fine Machine Sewing. Giordano mentions specific models of used machines that are "golden", while Ahles concentrates on getting the most quality work from any machine (but check out the chapter on buying sewing machines, too).

Otherwise, best advice I have for you is: http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm

My personal list of Must Haves include
1) excellent straight stitch
2) very good buttonholes (at least two styles) that don’t drive you crazy to make
3) zigzag
4) blind hem stitch
5) adjustable presser foot pressure

Things I like:
- a few utility stitches that are somewhat decorative, like a pin stitch and triple zigzag and maybe a scallop stitch or such
- electronic machine with stepper motors (gives you full "punching force" even at low speeds, unlike mechanical machines
- needle up/down control
- non jam sewing hooks
- a reasonable variety of specialty presser feet available at less than astronomical prices

FWIW, I’ve been sewing on a midline Viking electronic for the last 10+ years, my second zigzag machine (the first was the one I wore to shreds). Previous to that, all my machines had been straight-stitch hand me downs. The current machine is a major improvement over all previous machines in every way except straight stitch quality — when I need impeccable straight stitching for topstitching, I still dig out my grandmother’s old machine. I make almost all of my family’s clothes — though I draw the line at socks.

I’ve sewn on a great number of machines ranging in price from the bargain basement to the latest and greatest $7K machines, both when I was buying my current machine and in times since. Buy a machine you’re comfortable with, and yet will give you a little room to grow. It’s like shoes — what fits me may not fit you, even if we wear the same nominal size.

If you really want new, the best of the bargain machines I’ve tried have been Janome. Many of the Sears Kenmore machines seem to be Janomes in disguise. But in your budget, I’d really send you to the best sewing machine dealers and repair shops in the area, explain your budgets and needs, and ask what they’ve got in your price range. Most of the repair people I’ve met tend to be kinda crusty, but very willing to work with a beginner on a limited budget to find a machine that will not frustrate you. If you’re still uneasy, you might ask the nice folks on the yahoogroup "wefixit" if the model you’re being offered is worth the price.

Oh, btw, I’ve pulled Singer 15s,27s, 66s, 99s, 301s off the curb before junk day, given them a cleaning and oiling, and sent them on to new homes… and any of these old straight stitchers (if properly gone over and adjusted) would give you good results with what you’re looking for. Ditto several Elnas,
Vikings, Pfaffs, and once even a Bernina. You might also ask around and see what’s lurking in your friends’ closets that they might be willing to loan you to get your feet wet.

Moving into new home very soon and looking for an online interactive format for my kids to experiment with room colors. Does anyone know of any good sites?

try downloading google sketch up
