Home Decorating and Interior Design Ideas

I plan on making a homemade snow globe as an arts and craft project, and I’ve read that I want ornaments–Christmas ones–to put inside, but I don’t know if the paint can sustain itself in the liquid for very long. Does anyone on Yahoo! answers know what I can use? I’d much rather make my own figurine, but if not, does anyone else know where I can buy unique ones other than them being Christmas related?

You might want to read several of the categories on this page at my site about making your own snowglobes:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/outdoor_snowglobes_fountains.htm (first half of the page)

My whole site is primarily about using polymer clay (and this page about using polymer clay inside snowglobes, etc.) but that page will also cover other things too.

As for "ornaments" to put inside the snowglobes, I assume you mean little figures and items, not fabric or glass ball ornaments, etc. Most of those little figures & items will be fine but some of the paints or regular glitters, etc, could bleed over time, and some metals could rust… and anything you use will need to be waterproof (glass, metal, plastic).

Your best Christmas traditions?

Posted by Jade Martins on Oct-27-2009

Greetings,

Some mummy friends and I are brainstorming ideas to begin some Christmas traditions with 1 year olds. Something(s) that will be do-able each year (anything too complicated/time/labor intensive will just wind up being stressful someday). . . .we would love to hear any ideas from your childhood/your lives now/ideas for the future. . .

We’ve already considered the traditional ideas…a new Christmas ornament every year, reading a special story, baking cookinge, deocorating ginger bread houses, picture taking, caroling, etc.

Seeking your unique take or something altogether different, fun and memorable.

Tx-in-advance….Happy Holidays!
Of course we’ll put out cookies for Santa and reindeer food out for his reindeer. Santa will be ringing bells outside our daughter’s window too…

I buy ornament picture frames and fill them with pictures of the family. I started with myself and my husband and then one picture of each of our children. When My kids married I filled a ornament with the picture of them together and as they had children I filled an ornament for the children the year the were born and I up date these ornaments each year..
My children and my grand children love to come to my house and look for their ornament on the tree and they ask a lot of questions about this one and that one.

Do your neighbors have Christmas lighting wars?

Posted by Jade Martins on Oct-26-2009

My neighbors are going all out trying to outdo each other. I am worried that they will set the block on fire with their outdoor Christmas lighting. They must live for this event, because the level of competition is insane!
Do you have neighbors like this?
I have special laser lighting, but that’s reserved for the bedroom.

Not immediately surrounding my home because someone cut the electrical cords which is OK since they were bright enough to be seen by the Space Shuttle when it flew overhead.

First Christmas, present ideas?

Posted by Jade Martins on Oct-26-2009

This coming Christmas will be the first that my husband and I will be married for!! I am trying to think of something unique, or something nice, to get for him like "Our First Christmas" ornament or something. If you have any good ideas, I’d love to hear them!

Thanks!

Maybe a dog tag necklace, a bracelet, or a watch? Either way you go, jewelry can be very special when engraved.

You could get him a nice picture frame with your best picture together in it. The store Things Remembered has some lovely frames.

Here’s the link to the store’s website:

Another great idea would be to do the 365 things I love about you. That’s one reason per every day of the year! It’s very romantic and a perfect way to express your feelings towards someone. You write out the reasons either in a book, or on small pieces of paper which you can put in a nice box or jar. If you can come up with that amount of reasons – then you truly love that person. Personally, I LOVE this idea and am starting on doing it for my boyfriend.

Make him up a stocking as a side present. Include boxers, cologne, candy, and various other small gifts. If you’re in a sexual relationship and feel comfortable, you could add some sexy lingerie at the bottom. Also, you can make home-made coupons for various things of your choice.

Merry early Christmas!

Why are only some of my christmas lights lighting up?

Posted by Jade Martins on Oct-25-2009

I have colored string lights, and theyre the ones where you can adjust the pace of the lights by turning a little dial on the end of the string lights near the plug.. yet only specific colors are lighting up (in my case green and red instead of green red yellow and blue) does anyone know why this is? please help! how can i fix it? 10 points!

probably a shorted circuit. Change the first bulb that will not light up.

Posted by Jade Martins on Oct-24-2009

Fabrics compliment the decor of a room. The sheer beauty of fabrics can give a facelift to any space. Fabric for home decorating can be used in couch covers, upholstery, slip covers, window treatments, bed coverings, table tops, etc. A fabric less room in a home looks plain and has a cold hard feel. Any room could be transformed into a warm, cozy and inviting place to enjoy with friends and family or just to relax, by the judicious use of fabric for home decorating.

As fabrics for home decorating form an integral part of room decor, it is important to use the fabrics which blend well with other furniture of the room. If you are using a specific decorating design as per the suggestions and advice given to you, then it is very easy to pick the fabrics for home decorating. But without any clue, it is a very frustrating job to choose them and you soon tend to get discouraged. Instead of progressing towards your dream home, you may end up in a nightmare of confusion.

There are a variety of themes for home decorating, each with its own specific style and color for the fabrics for home decorating. If you have selected a theme to guide you in home decorating, the process of choosing the fabric for home decoration becomes smooth. For example, a Tuscan theme would use fabric of woven textures like bur lab, fabrics made of the fiber abaca, tobacco cloth and savannah cloth or fabrics out of the banana tree fibers. Fabrics of Tuscan home decorations are no doubt heavier but they also are very versatile and flexible. The Tuscan theme uses these fabrics for blinds, rugs, slip-covers or for drapes.

If you prefer the Cottage theme, fabrics for home decorating use bright colors and floral patterns. Cottage decorating as far as upholstery and projects using fabric go, point to colourful and bold patterns. Fabrics with printed fruit or vegetables are used in the cottage theme, though more popular is a floral pattern in fabrics of the cottage theme of home decorating.

The Victorian theme of home decorating uses rich fabrics like brocade or velvet in deep colors of burgundy, green or blue. Victorian fabrics for home decoration have a feminine touch and tend to be elaborate. These materials can be used for bedding, slip-covers, curtains, etc. They look excellent if trimmed with ribbons, beads or lace.

Different themes employ different fabrics for home decorating. The above are only a few examples. Your choice should focus on the fabrics that appeal to you. It would also be wise to remember that fabrics for home decorating can be really expensive; and once you choose and buy a fabric, you could be stuck with it for a long time. Hence it is very important to be absolutely sure that you like it before making the final purchase. These fabrics used in home decorating very often need special care while washing. If you prefer a fabric that is easy to clean, it is important to remember this aspect while choosing the fabric. After all, it is for your home and it is important that the purchase suits your tastes and needs. The choice for fabrics for home decorating is really vast. But with the help of home decorating catalogues and magazines, websites of internet and the fabric stores in your vicinity, you will find it easy to make a sensible choice for fabrics of home decorating.

Decorating with the Contemporary home decorating style is a fantastic way to give your home a sleek and stylish look. Using this style you can get the feeling of modern design with contemporary style decorating no matter what type of home you have.

One of the first things you need to think about is furniture. You want to choose items that are sleek and made of simple woods or, perhaps, steel to enhance the contemporary home decorating style. Make sure you stick to pieces in a sleek linear style and don’t go for any floral or “old fashioned” style fabrics.

Window treatments is another important part of any interior decorating design. Decorating with simple curtains, drapes or shutters with this interior decorating scheme works great, but you should make sure they are minimalist in design. Depending on the type of look you are going for in the room, you could choose plain sheers or even just wooden blinds.

Take your design theme down to the floor by having matching area rugs. You should try to ensure you pick something which enhances your interior design in both color and style. To provide an attractive decorative look, why not consider short pile or shag rugs in colors like white, black or beiges?

Every design theme needs accessories, so try to choose paintings and other decorative items that set off your contemporary theme. The minimalist aura of this design approach should be mirrored in the accessories so you don’t want to pick anything that is to frilly, nor do you want to clutter up the room with too much stuff. A few simple but carefully placed items will work with your décor to enhance the design.

Lighting is a key factor for any style but you would be smart to be certain that you match yours to the contemporary style. When locating your lighting fixtures for this look, go with something that is modernistic in design and simple in line. Recessed lighting always looks good and for accent lamps you want to stick to simple wood or steel lamps with unadorned shades.

It’s not hard to add the sleek look of the contemporary home decorating style and it doesn’t have to drain your budget either. If you apply smart shopping techniques and look for your items at sales and even buy second hand at consignment stores and yard sales, you can save loads of money while still getting a great look!
