When we put our Christmas tree lighting on we smell a burning smell what could be the problem?

but when we turn it off it goes away
My first thought was dust on the bulbs but the newer bulbs don’t get hot. Are they old bulbs?
Could there be a needle from the tree caught in a bulb socket?
Try removing the lights and plugging each strand in separately and see if you get the smell. You may just have to replace one strand of lights. Lights are pretty cheap if you just replace them all.
